Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Joining Ford has been the biggest regret of my life

Just a cess pool of mediocrity and half way dead co workers who want to just sit and warm the desk.

Stock price is here in the gutter and will probably trend to 0 while Tesla will keep making ATHs. No one who is ambitious or even remotely talented stays long term

I’m embarrassed to work here and can’t wait for the day I move

@4qvm+1qfP4sn2. No real mystery. He most likely did plenty of work for most of those 35 years, but coasted into retirement. He then was unable or saw no reason to break out of coast mode at the new job. A 35 year pension plus another year salary isn't a bad deal for him. But I have seen plenty of young engineers hire in that have been unproductive as well. It isn't entirely their fault. The onboarding process and teamwork is very poor.

He then talked his way into a full time position at another company making more money than at Ford. It was a head scratcher why he would be hired. Well he just got laid off from the company this week, so the mystery is solved He talked a good game in the interview but did not perform so they cut him. He seemed baffled that they would cut him as he was sitting at his desk 7-5 daily. Heard from his coworkers that he was an excellent chair warmer.

Its a mystery why Ford will pay someone for 35 years for doing nothing, when another company cuts a person after a year of non-performance.

Most likely a job for Ford is in Michigan.

Stay away.

The government is hostile. And, it is incompetent. Any dealings you have with it will leave you with a sore an-l canal.

Six months of the year the weather is either terrible or awful.

The Detroit area is dull, boring, and crime is increasing.

The job market for engineers su-ks (unless you toss your engineering education and become a project manager).

Just stay away. Run, don’t walk.

I see this and hear everyday with workers who fly underneath the radar to collect a check, brown nose personnel who say and do anything to be promoted, lazy supervision, LL6, LL5's waiting to retire or have been elected to this position by previous negligent supervision, LL6, LL5's.

Don't worry the ones who have been warming desks will be the ones who will remain and keep getting promoted. It's the Ford way.

Working at Ford was the best thing that ever happened to me. No place is perfect but I value my time there, as well as my coworkers and cool projects I was able to work on. No place is perfect but if you have the ambition and experience you can make something of it. I had previous jobs that I hated but I still learned something and was able to contribute. Build on this, hand-wringing accomplishes nothing.

@OP be thankful that you realized you are not a fit for Ford and move on.
Ford is not a place for innovative, technically ambitious and productive individuals. It is a place for clock punching bureaucrats and the politically ambitious ( those unwilling to do the work but quite prepared and willing to take the credit for others work).

I have some family members who thrive at Ford. They are either the bureaucratic types who have happily done one thing repetitively for 20 years, or the blow-hard back-slapping bullying type who are middle management.

I have some family members that hated working at Ford. Each of them were the highly intelligent, innovative and productive sorts. All became frustrated that Ford management and coworkers were not just resistant to change and innovation but down right hostile to it. All were tremendously successful once they left Ford.

Yes family gatherings are interesting.

Here is the issue nobody wants to say out loud, the culture at Ford us by design. Been with the company nearly 25 years. The Fords and the BOD have continued to work to beat down the workforce as a means of control. Maybe some time ago in the far past it was different, however even as a young employee when I started, the older employees were just as beat down. Certainly they could change the atmosphere, but they don't....and they don't want it to change. Just look at the PR and promotion systems, it is all by design. The Fords and the BOD are only interested in leadership that will essentially be prison guards and do their bidding. Current young employees, don't kid yourselves, plan is to move all white collar to Mexico, China, and Brazil. They will then use desperation to drive down US white collar wages to at or below low cost country wage levels. These will be the people working at the Dearborn campus. Those and visiting LCC employees. If you think otherwise, you ate pretty blind to what is going on right out in the open.

@OP. Congrats! If joining Ford it is your biggest regret in life, that means you haven't messed up much in your life, or you haven't had a long time yet to mess your life up. Either case, the solution is obvious: leave the company.

It is true that the company today is just a shadow of what it was before. Ford always had this bureaucratic approach, some FnF/managers playing politics and a weird insistence on making everything the "Ford way". Now all the bad things have grown too much, curtailing the decent operation of the company. I wouldn't join the company today, actually I am preparing my way out.

Personally, I am grateful that I started working at Ford several years ago. I met nice and knowledgeable coworkers. I was able to reach certain goals in life thanks to the stability provided by my job at Ford. Most important, I was able to contribute with my experience and knowledge, improving on others' work.

Ford was always a paycheck, a means to an end, never my family or whatever crazy loyalty some employees think they must show to the company. I had good and bad moments, but I never forgot is a business contract between the company and myself. I provide my labor, my knowledge, and I get paid for it. No loyalty expected on either side of the transaction.

Ford is free to let me go whenever they please, and I am free to leave Ford whenever I please. No golden handcuffs for me, so I don't even have to worry for a pension. I get paid today what I am worth, not waiting 20 years to see it in the pension. I call that a fair agreement.

I am not a slave, nor I need someone babysitting me all the time. As a grown up man, I am responsible for my actions, my career choices, and my life. I don't come here to whine about my wrong choices, but to share my frustations with my fellow Ford employees. Why? Because it hurts seen such an iconic American company being gutted by a bunch of selfish mo--ns at the top.

The company could be in such a better position, if not for the myopic decisions taken by Bill Ford and his acolytes. It hurts because I care about the company, which have received years of my efforts; I care about my coworkers, some of them were already kicked out to the curb; I care about my country, which is weaker every time we outsource jobs and American companies close down.

Still, I know my limitations. One vote does not decide elections, no matter how many times I hear that my vote matters. One low level employee cannot change the disaster at the top of the company. The only thing I can do, and I am already doing it, is to be responsible for my stuff: do my job, keep myself up to date, look for other opportunities, raise a good honest family, and vote for what I believe in. After all, the world can go to h.ll without my help.

You and many other salary employees who joined Ford. I left Ford and joined other company last year. It's a big difference in the company culture. No more depressing work environment. I feel more motivated and I can contribute a lot more to the company.

Yep, co-workers sitting around complaining who are the problem. Supervisors, LL6's, LL5's with defeatist attitudes who sit around collecting a check, waiting to retire or figuring what productive employees to fire.
