Relative Pay

I plan to Join Cisco, rather than asking for a fixed package, can I ask for pay greater than the max pay of a few people I know as they are mediocre and I feel I should be paid more than them? Did anyone try this before?

Companies like Apple and Google make people ride a unicycle on the high wire while juggling flaming knives and blindfolded in the interview process and by so many measures the quality of much of their work is extremely poor. Quality of work isn't just the abstract capability of an employee but all the opportunities and obstructions of the company as well.

Unless you've already worked in the same team with all the same people at Cisco and outperformed already then left Cisco on good terms you have nothing but a belief. Cisco crushes talent like no other company I know.

How do you know what their skills are if you don't already work with them? If you worked with them before, and it shows on your resume, then you'll most likely get offers at the same pay as them.

Otherwise, HR will determine your base pay based on your years of experience to determine your pay grade, which has an upper & lower limit, as well as a "median" pay. Managers, based on interviewing, can push to increase the pay above the median, but that puts an LR "target" on your back because you're now "more expensive" and they don't care about performance, but care about the bottom-line.

Plus, if you're above the median for your pay-grade, then it's harder to justify a pay raise each year as the majority of the pay increase budget gets applied to those below the median, unless there's a good reason that they're below median like newly promoted w/ room to grow pay-wise.

Go for it and let us know how it goes. I can tell you from my personal experience, there were several of us all on the same team, with similar years of experience (+/- 5 yrs) all doing the same job title (S/W Engineer level 1/2/3) or something like that and we were all contractors in line to be converted to employees in the order we joined as contractors. The guy with the middle amount of years of experience told the manager he wanted something like $20K more than he expected to get so that he could "negotiate" his salary. I don't know what the guy with the least years of experience asked for, but I basically asked for $5K more than my contractor pay. All three of us were hired at the same pay grade and we all got the "median" pay for that pay-grade/job title. There was zero negotiation. The offer was the offer.

I left Cisco a long time ago due to an LR, but had an opportunity to come back under a manager I really liked. He asked what my previous Cisco salary rate was, because he thought he was going to have to bring me in a pay-grade lower than I was originally and wanted to try to keep my new pay at least the same as my original pay. He managed to get me back in at the same pay-grade as my original time, and then even a little pay bump because it had been 3 yrs and inflation. But, it put me above the median pay for that pay-grade and when he retired, HR & the new manager took one look at that above-average pay and I was on the next LR list after he retired and wasn't there to push to keep me.
