Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

I recently secured a new position in Dallas after a thorough application process, including an interview where I specifically inquired about the nature of the role. During the interview, I was informed that the position was newly created, adding headcount to the team, and that the individuals currently in training roles would be transitioning to different responsibilities.

However, upon meeting my trainer (while still fulfilling my current job responsibilities), I discovered that I am, in fact, replacing an individual who is being let go due to the company's implementation of a new work-from-Dallas policy. Additionally, I learned that the hiring manager had opted for a different internal position to avoid relocating to Dallas.

The discrepancy between what was communicated during the interview and the actual circumstances is concerning and raises red flags for me. I'm scheduled for a meeting with my boss, and while I don't believe I can undo my decision, I feel the need to address the discrepancy and express my concerns about the honesty surrounding the hiring process.

I accepted a new position within ATT in the late 80's. I had to finish up some outstanding matters and couldn't get released for 30 days. When I got there, new boss (awful) and different roll. When I left for a new company, I kept putting these managers resumes in the shredder. Dang that Karma can hirt.

Seems you are assuming the person you are replacing is not going on to live happily ever after. No need to know the details of that person’s life. Jobs open up all the time for various reasons. Don’t demand to know the circumstances for yours.

Surprised with RTOs being public knowledge that you’d even need to ask. You were just trying to make yourself feel better about the job. Don’t get comfortable because the winds shift quickly and you could be gone just as quickly. Keep your mouth closed and head down. Otherwise you will get added to the next list. Long term employees know this. But I’d look outside the company for a new job.

Was told by a VP that they extended the lease in El Segundo but that doesn’t necessarily matter. Leases can be broken. More relevant is that there are basically no roles posted for that location and by 4 the place feels deserted. I wouldn’t bank on them staying. I’m trying to get out but it is definitely a grind finding something else.

I think the tough job market and people’s inertia are why we have not seen more departures due to the RTO lies and BS.

Both things can be true at the same time. Net new position is approved, while the backfill for the former employee who didn't relocate is still going through the approval process. Unless the manager tells her team about all the internal HR processes, they wouldn't know the difference between these scenarios.

It stinks for the person who lost their job in the process but this is business. The only winner here can be the company so if you feel bad enough to walk away from income, thats all this is, then go ahead but if I were you I would take the job and do as much networking as you can outside the company.

It’s hard to believe that HR and management at this company wouldn’t be honest about their intentions. Sure they sneak around lie about everything all the time, but this time they really meant to tell the truth.

Take the job, learn and expand knowledge. I hope your trainer is nice and willing to help you.
Keep looking for honorable managers to move to, they still exist.

Integrity is when someone’s words match their actions- AT&T has an integrity void- literally no one over a 3rd line has any integrity at all zero , nil, nada.
My advice take ur lumps - until you can find work with an organization that has integrity.

OP, best to just take the job and not make waves as long as your old team will have you back. Yes that’s shady on the new boss and team. My recommendation would be to just go with the flow for now, making waves with the new team is not a good start for you.

Keep the new job, more layoffs are going to happen, you may soon be training your replacement. The hiring manager still faces the same risk of layoffs as you and I do.

I wouldn't have accepted the position if I had known the circumstances. That's why I have a meeting scheduled with my boss. If each of us asked and received truthful answers, then refused these jobs we might be able to put an end to this practice. If someone decides to move on, whether due to poor performance or by choice, I would gladly consider taking on the new job

Has your boss hired a replacement yet? I suggest you let the person who sent you your offer letter from HR know of this.
HR won't care but atleast it is documented.
Would you have taken the job if they were honest with you?
