LCS - How is it ?

My boss keeps asking me about going to LCS. I hear mixed reviews about it. Is it worth going there ? I am VG and being valued in my group, there is no one who can do what I do - I am pretty confident that my job is secure in current role. However I’ve been doing same thing for 15 years. They promise me broader career if I go to LCS, but I am having second thoughts

A lot of HiPos there. If you aren’t a HiPo beware as they need people to fill the lower part of the rank group.

This should answer your question

UK supermajor Shell has reportedly started to slash hundreds more jobs, with employees in its low-carbon solutions being among those first to the shown the door.

VG is remotely considered valued, it's middle of the road. Unfortunately, if you have been doing the same thing for 15 years, then they don't consider you upwardly promotable. It's got nothing to do with LCS being a better/worse organization. They are effectively walking you down the plank and going to let some other group push you off.

Watch out for political maneuvering and back channel tactics. Some may see you as a threat if you have real skills. Or you may be seen as a stepping stone. It won’t take you long to figure who are the takers and the know nothing. He will chew you up and sp-t you out and then on to the next one. Just stay clear of such individuals. Do good work but have options when they push you back into your parent organization.

If you have to ask others if you should go work for a company called "Low Carbon Solutions," you should definitely go. That you are considering, as a carbon-based life form, going to such a place, tells me you'd fit right in.

I think these MFers know better than to ask me. Umm, yeah, hard pass on that bullsh-t.

Same comment as others. Don't come unless you are passionate about the space. Ranking will drop unless you have sponsors and parent org willing to pull you back

Don't go. Ask yourself why your boss would even suggest this to you if you're truly as valued as you think ? "No one can do what you do" doesn't compute with "go to LCS". I get the feeling you won't have a path back if you ever leave your group regardless if you go to LCS or elsewhere. I've seen this before. A comfortable senior engineer that thinks they're instrumental to a group is given a "great new opportunityTM". They hate the new opportunity, they hate it, they try to go back and find that the role that "no one else could do" has been filled and running just fine. Eventually it dawns on the comfortable senior engineer that they've actually just been managed out of the group with no way back. They either quit or get PIPed as they're performance drops from a being a job they hate. OP, make sure this "opportunity" isn't a kn--e.

Do you like screwing taxpayers and believe in the stupidity called "anthropogenic global climate change"? If so, you might fit in.

If you switch groups prepare for a rank drop….

It’s a vipers pit. Some got there by shady practices. If you are pushed to go to LCS, make sure you have an exit strategy.

Totally agree with @kmk that experience can be detrimental to your ranking in LCS. Lots of egos there without the experience to match. Those narcissists want to believe they are entrepreneurs building a business from the ground up. Anyone with experience is seen as closed minded, or worse can be seen as a threat and dealt with accordingly.

My best advice for maintaining a respectable ranking is to make sure you are a valued member of a job family and are on a succession plan to backfill someone above you within that job family. OP is in a vulnerable position because boss’s posture is a tell that you are not viewed as a valued member of your current job family. Did you say something to the boss indicating a strong desire to move? If so, was it interpreted as lack of interest or commitment to the current job family? Or did you just get passed over in that job family and now it’s time to move on?

What group? Keep in mind half the people that go to LCS see their ranking drop by 2 buckets. it’s run by external hires that are not going to take into account your past 15 years of service. Most EM experience doesn’t help you and will likely hurt you in that org. It’s a viper pit and most of the groups don’t have real work to do so there’s competition to have anything of value on your PdS
