Some useful info if you get LR-ed

I was affected July last year, some info which I think is useful:

  1. It’s not end of the world.

They give you 3 months of having to do nothing while still covered by benefits and payroll. You can do a lot in 3 months (unwind, learning, networking etc).
There’s few months worth of severance as well, should be enough to support during job hunting.
Don’t forget to claim state unemployment as well, it’s your money!

  1. You will lose all engineering access (git, eng webpages etc) the next day, only webex team and e-mail remains.

However, your data in your laptop will stay as is.
If you’re a nice guy, you will copy your current work to your laptop before the access is gone, so you can do TOI to your team member.

  1. IT will remote install file monitoring app to your laptop on the same day you get LR notifications.

Legal will get notified if you copy data out of your laptop via USB, feel like a damn men in black vibe.

  1. Reach out to your co workers, previous managers etc … sometimes they can connect you with opportunities internal or external.

Or maybe just offer simple encouragement which is always nice.

  1. You will get your “earned” bonus, it’s mentioned explicitly in your LR package. In my case, I got 100% personal performance factor. Factor is perhaps depend team by team.

But I don’t think you will ever get $0.

  1. You will also lose access to your building / cube lol.

They will give you one time access (time of your choosing) to access your cube and pack up your belongings.
Or you can ask then to pack it and send it over to your home address.
Monitor keyboards dock etc belongs to you and they state that explicitly.

RSUs… you will still be entitled to any RSU matured before your last day in cisco (which most likely would be 3 months after LR notification).

In my case, last day was mid october, but the LR package specifically mentioned I was still getting november RSU too which was really nice.

Cisco Verification Of Employment (VOE)…. Didn’t ask for it so not too sure.

However, you still have HR support (web chat works great) so you can ask them about it.
Once axed, almost all employee web tools will become inaccessible, so HR support will be the only way to go.

Phone number and mobile device… unfortunately I didn’t have those, so can’t offer any guide. I’m guessing you can port the number and take the phone with you.
Just like they let you take your work monitors / keyboards etc.

Insurance… Oh yeah, didn’t mention about insurance, sorry for that.
In my case, I’ve got covered by my spouse’s insurance, thank goodness my spouse was working.

Very solid advice and post. I agree with the Cobra comment, you will do far better in the marketplace if my experience is any guide. If you meet the criteria, RMAP is an option but again the costs were not competitive with the same coverage - from the same providers in the open marketplace.

To add on.... when you update the resume people look for specifics on skills. I am at a company now and had over 100 applicants to a recent openings. Things like "lead a team who grew the base 75% year on year, and drove cross functional teams to achieve outcome X, or results driven leader.... wow, those are burned in my consciousness as I rejected 100. What won out in hiring? Expert in L2 and L3 networking technologies like BGP EVPN, produced document Y showing best practices in optimizing RoCEv2, Kubernetes container performance, Worked with key customers (and yes name them) on designs, and helped accelerate project schedules by helping them automate deployments, etc.etc. The net? Be specific to your skills. Cisco will be loosing much high quality talent in these pivots - many companies are starving for talented people with experience - not the former platitudes and truisms. Good luck, hold your head up, remain positive and good things will happen.

The most valuable thing is to look at the health insurance marketplace. Cobra is EXTREMELY expensive
