Thread regarding IBM layoffs

PIP and Severance package

Anyone in consulting can explain if being fired after put in PIP for utilization (there are no contracts thus no chargable hours) gets you a severance package. Also are you fired the last day of the PIP or given a couple of weeks. I'm not yet in PIP but closely enough.

This is wrong. If fired for not meeting job performance standards (as in a PIP), you will STILL get unemployment benefits.

My current company (post IBM Q1 of 2023) initiates termination process with HR on last day of PIP and it's out the door "for cause". And this company is fast on HR actions.

Also a sweatshop - so be sure to fully vette your new possible employer before accepting - even if things are tough for you right now.

That said, HR at another company, that "fired me for (bullsh-t) cause" , the HR lady said to apply for Unemployment, then the company generally will respond "fired for cause", and then you give your story in detail. HR lady said that employers almost NEVER respond at that point (basically for fear of lawsuits) so you will (as I did) win your appeal. And get unemployment.

So technically - you're not eligible for unemployment if "fired for cause" (PIP counts) - but also most companies won't respond to appeal from unemployment office.

And if you resign then you leave everything behind (any notice, any pay, ...)

As common as this practice is, particularly with IBM, getting "sacked" won't overtly affect getting a new job.

IBM does NOT have severance. What folks call severance is a contract gag order. As such they want ALL to take it - no matter "for cause" or not. But esp "for cause"

For the USA, you will get 30 days severance and you'll be fired on the day of the PIP expiration.

PIP’s are usually offered with terms being set by your manager and HR
Get notified by your manager (you may accept severance, or work the pip)
PIP ends and you either made it and stay employed or missed and get walked to the door
Most PIP’s (75-80%) if worked end in dismissal after 30-60 days

what if this is US based role in consulting IBM? Do you get like 2 months severance if laid off post-PIP?

It depends on the country in which you are employed. For example in Canada they would have to pay you as if you were laid off.
