Thread regarding IBM layoffs

RTO / SEPARATION OPTIONS?

Has anyone seen exactly what the separation package is? Previous packages have been three months' pay, one month's pay, and way back - a month for every year.

How are employees supposed to make such huge decisions without any information on what their options are?

We're down to two weeks. I've asked my manager several times and I still have nothing.

"Last year it was one month notice and 3 months severance… "
Not for me last year. It was one month notice (to find another job in IBM) and ONE month severance. This was Systems and Mar/April 2023 ; AFAIK the 3 months was perhaps 2022? Or some other major division.

Last year, March/April 2023 - it's 30 days to find a job within IBM. Then it's "severance." Not sure about PIP.

But IBM does NOT have severance. What folks call severance is a contract gag order. As such they want ALL to take it - no matter "for cause" or not. But esp "for cause"

The employee who is subject to an RTO should not engage in this charade of "quitting by not RTO" or some such BS like that. To preserve access to state unemployment benefits, the employee must always be "ready and willing to work".

Now, that's not to say that IBM can't fire the employee...but that's on them. If IBM fires the employee for not RTO, then in many states the employee can still claim unemployment benefits. IBM may protest, but that protest will fall on deaf ears because it was IBM who involuntarily terminated the employee...the employee didn't quit.

So...the appropriate course of action:

  1. Refuse to RTO (if that is your choice)
  2. Wait for IBM to make the next move...DO NOT QUIT ON YOUR OWN.
  3. If IBM fires you, then so be it...that is their choice. Apply for unemployment.
  4. While all this is happening, look for another job.

If RTO is required and you don’t want to do it, how do you figure they will be offering severance? Refusing to RTO will not get you a payout beyond unused PTO as you are essentially quitting by not agreeing to terms of employment.

That’s the whole reason behind this scheme, to AVOID severance costs.

For USA, the most common one is 1 month severance after they let you go you.

The epitome of idiocy! They expect people to make a decision before March 1st, but HR won't share details until after March 1st Makes perfect sense in this new IBM.

With decades of layoffs behind us this should be easy to plan for ! Plan to get NOTHING.
This way you are covered for the whatever they toss at you.

2-4 weeks is when the layoffs will be public per a employee. What the package will look like I don't know. In my day it was 3 months to look and then typical pay in for health benefits, they sent letter for unemployment which made things easy, if being laid off can be viewed that way. Based on the new CEO bringing India management style 'follow work or don't work for IBM', uprooting family etc. I would not expect any type of generous package regardless of years of service. Old timers beware.

In my time, the separation package was 2 weeks per year of service, up to a maximum of 26 weeks, plus CORBA. You were notified of the RA one month in advance of your actual separation date, and in that one month lag period you were pretty much free to do whatever you want. No work product expected, no meetings, no telephone calls. In my case, I never heard from my first line manager ever again after he told me the news (remote worker). After one month passed, I went to a designated IBM office and handed my laptop, badge, etc. to another IBM manager who was onsite, but outside the organization. They gave me a paper check and sent me on my way.

From overhearing HR, they cant share anything until Arvind signs off on the total budget. March 1st was mentioned for that signing.
