Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

We're not as easily manipulated

There's a reason why BNY Mellon has been getting rid of its older, more experienced employees. It's much harder to manipulate somebody who knows their worth into doing three jobs for the price of half of one. Younger employees are eager and naive and will take on whatever is thrown their way, even if that means they'll have no life left and will be barely able to pay their bills. The management has been taking full advantage of that for a while now.

@1pww

It’s goofy to talk about demographic cohorts as if all in the group have the same opinions, likes & dislikes and the same education, the same intelligence, etc.

They simply don’t and they never will

@OP

Actually they target the old because they’re the most expensive.

Nobody is doing three jobs for the price of one, not since the boomers anyway…

@1pww

What you’re describing is absolutely normal, but only for every generation ever.

My advice is to listen and learn.

Hey Gen Z, check in with this bs in 30 years. Wait until your peers are running the show and the stock hasn't moved in 20 years. I think you'll be find with the status quo. In the 80's I read how the boomers starting with the same sentiments ("we're going to change the world", "authority su-ks", more so than Gen Z) and eventually most buy into the system. You probably aren't well read on this topic. Work hard, it's uncomfortable but won't ki-l you if you don't take it personally. My kids are Gen Z & slightly north of a 100 IQ (I had them tested). I preach the same to them and they are successful beyond my expectations. Thanks in advance for the downvotes. #fputin. P.S. I don't necessarily disagree with the original post but every generation has been dealt the same cards, get over it.

@1pww, that's strange, the younger people I know think people should be hired based on merit, not based on DEI identities.

Well Gen Z is very smart and now even Alpha born in year 2000 is joining the workforce. Good luck Employers finding a conducive work environment for them.

50% of Gen Z wants to ditch corporate jobs and run their own businesses, according to new research. They don't want Employers to manipulate them to make.

Else , if they work for an Employer Gen-Zers desire flexible and remote work arrangements, demand a higher quality of life with a solid work-life balance and priority on mental health, and want to work for a company that shares similar values regarding ethics, social causes and diversity, equity and inclusion (DE&I).

It is going to get even more Complex when Generation Alpha joins the workforce.

Younger former BNYM software engineer here.
I agree with all of this. BNYM was my first job out of college.
Also to upper management, you sat us down and told us how you wanted to us to replace aka allow older employees to retire to our faces in front of all the new grads.
The unfortunate thing is that even new grads don't want their jobs and leave very quickly as they know their worth.
Good luck outsourcing now to other countries like India to maintain US business. I am not trying to dismiss India, though it is better to have people in the same country you try to do business with for the future.
