When people are made to feel that they are not good enough, it is often not necessarily true. The reasons for laying off people are many, besides low performance. People often say it is age related... yes, and no... older workers are expensive (according to bean counters) and are let go, primarily because they are 'expensive' in the eyes of people who think every worker contributes the same... in short, guys, do not allow someone to tell you that you are not up to the standard - often that is not true.

If you got let go you were not a top performer - period. The promo means nothing.
The UK is not a priority, so you were exposed to start with.
You are believing your own dream. Wake up.

It’s not just the bottom 5%. If you are too good, have higher grade, then you can also become a target. I speak from experience . I got LRed within 2 months of being promoted in the UKI org. So, then you have to ask yourself the question: if I am too good, I get LRed. If I am bottom 5% I get LRed. How do I make myself mediocre, not get promoted , not get too many RSUs so that I can stay employed. This is farcical to the point of being unreal.

It is not necessarily a bad thing to cull the "bottom" 5%. The problem is there is a poor process of quantifying performance.
