Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

How many of you that got laid off thought ...

it couldn't be me. I'm a high performer! I'm better than those lowly folks we've been LRd in the past!

maybe I shouldn't have ghosted all of them now that I need a job.

The best thing to do if you weren't lucky enough to be laid off is take full advantage of the time remaining. 10-20 hour work weeks, have no care in the world for productivity, and what limited time you are there just prepare for exiting. Start adding to your resume, build your list of recommendations, learn other skills, and determine what type of work you want to do. I was happy to be gone and relieved. Went to a place that is 40 hours only per week, realistic expectations, realistic schedules, work that is valued. Yes it is not the same money, but the path to retirement is real.

If someone says “I worked so hard” they have major insecurities issues.

Once I saw the headline, I knew it was going to be me. I had recently moved from support of a region to a smaller group that was up and coming with newer management focusing on newer products to market. I expect a few factors played in my LR. 1 I was no longer "critical" as I had handed off the larger region to someone else, thus they became more critical. 2. In my handling of the region, a few years ago my VP got called on something by the sales VP and got in a tizzy....I expect that marked me for good no matter how good the rest of the years went and reviews from my manger were..plus no other problems. I expect I would have been gone from 2022 LR if I had not been "critical" at that time. 3. White guy >50 so I do not check a DIE box and make a bit more than they probably like....so easier to save a bit more $$$ in cuts plus get some reparations by targeting an eeeeviiill group.

"tired of these frequent layoffs which neither help them control costs in long term nor help build a business for growth in long term"

The layoffs do help to control costs if you deep dive & follow the money.

Unfortunately I wasn't picked. I even asked my boss to select me! No such luck. My package would be well over a year of salary (EU-based). If given the opportunity, I wouldn't hesitate. I can't stand seeing those ELT clowns anymore. Gross incompetence and bad acting are their only two skills.

tired of these frequent layoffs which neither help them control costs in long term nor help build a business for growth in long term .. instead of playing all these BS games, they should just rip off the bandaid in one go and then build the business for long term growth. its better for employees (not having to constantly worry about next LR around the corner) as well as company in long term.
its hard to argue that they should not do layoffs even if the business vertical is dying but doing that with thousand cuts has major impact on employee moral and mental health.

I am pretty sure that whoever got layoffs in past are probably in much better situation now after dealing with short term pain.

Everything happening is simply related to cutting costs … and the biggest cost is people. If they can replace a role with either technology or a person offshore that cost less, they’re going to do it. Customer satisfaction plays little role, since the negative impacts of that take a while to show up. Execs think “my replacement in 5 years will have to deal with that, I just care about the next several quarters, my options, and my bonus.” As long as we live and die on short term thinking — this scene will replay year after year.

there are a million of reasons why you were picked and it could be a combine of those. There's no point asking the why me question because you will never truly find out the real reason. Instead save that energy to find a new job.

I am a high performer, and still I am thinking why couldn't be me?

Everybody is paid by customer directly or indirectly. If your position is in one of the high cost locations, they will move your job to different locations such as Mexico or Bangalore. They just want to cut cost.

Yeah mine still doesn’t make much sense I’m solely hired specifically for the customer and paid for directly by the customer with many years left on that contract. And redundancy would imply the position is going away but it isn’t.
