Thread regarding ExxonMobil Corp. layoffs

Why managers should be PIP’d

This company has turned into a cesspool of poor managers. My former manager was prime example:

  1. Took no responsibility for deliverables of the team. (MIA. He spent most of his time working on his next promotion.)
  2. No psychological safety. (Example- He hinted that my career would be damaged if I don’t do XYZ. Actually he made sure of it)
  3. No meaningful coaching. (set himself apart from the underlings.)
  4. No empathy. (Example - Never inquiry into my or others wellbeing during COVID. MIA.)
  5. No development plan. (Mainly communicated his development plan to get to his next role. Never talked about my development plan.)
  6. No expectations for the team and align with the right work. (Gave a bunch of orders that led nowhere. Lacked knowledge of the work or what it requires.)
  7. Recognition and appreciation. (Showed none except when it involves getting the limelight himself. Took credit for the work that I did.)
  8. Strategy and execution. (keeps inserting the word “strategy” when in reality it was making things up and seeing what sticks.)

He and others like him seem to thrived in this company. Because once identified, there is no mechanism to weed them out.

@1bki+1rAvUs8l Very true, it was never perfect, but the compensation now does not justify the aggravation now.

Because they wrongfully PIP’d an employee based on lies and ignorance.

Your description of your manager fits the mold for 90% of EM managers

Leaders??? So tired of that completely misplaced word.

Supervision and management are now completely MIA because all they do is manage upwards. I honestly never see my manager, and my supervisor I talk to maybe once a fortnight for about 2 minutes. They are so busy...

Bad acting police give good police a poor reputation. Same applies with EM Managers. Those of us trying will not be rewarded for developing the next set of leaders.

All the above. I could have used these exact points to describe my management. And supervision... Equally inept and consistently MIA.
