Well, I played that rat-race card for 22 years. Always feared about finding adequate work. Gave up several opportunities because I grew up in a culture where a parent was loyal to the company they worked for. I gave up an opportunity to go to Red Hat when it was a fledgling. Gave up an opportunity to go to Amazon. Just out of pure culture believing company loyalty existed. All workers need to work like the younger generation. You are looking for your next job within 6 months in the current one. No company is loyal to you. You are NOTHING more than an expense to them. Until you realize that, you are the reason for the fear. It took getting let go to see the light.

I took 3 months to find a high quality job. My job search focused on mental health over salary. I turned down offers that would just be hopping into the layoff cycle. When talking honestly and openly with potential companies, my #1 requirement was a position that I could grow without fear of layoff. When that company came about, all other discussions and negotiations were simple. Yes, I took a pay cut of about 20%. Over half of that was mitigated in benefits, mainly health insurance fully covered for family. It only took 2 more years to get back to the old take home salary. For anyone that lives in this type of stress, get out. It will ki-l you.

You kids and your mandatory seat belts who weren't thrown into traffic without a helmet became too dependent on everything else protecting you. You live in a world where 99.9% of all species are extinct, including most of the 21 hominin species over the past 7 million years. Your body is full of microplastics and you'll likely die of a horrible disease. If you live in a third world country like the US you not only won't be able to get some inexpensive and easy to manufacture medicines but even the simplest medical resources like sterile saline in a bag because we worship money so much we won't accept the low financial returns those businesses could provide. These are just the start of things that will cause you severe damage or destruction.

Use the risk management skills that you should have developed in most disciplines of business. Bulk up on a broader set of skills. Grow a professional network. Grow a personal network of friends where you can let each other blow off some steam. Live WAY below your means and invest wisely. Eat healthy and exercise. If you feel your company is not a healthy place to work, change where you work. Sometimes a step back now will allow you to go further in the future, so don't let your identity get too wrapped up in title or salary.

Yes, it is the way of the beast. Let the hunger games begin. Could be for a while.
