Thread regarding IBM layoffs

CEO is out of touch with real world

CEO office hours march 21 2024, omg the way he addressed several questions about employment expectations and back to office...he thinks it's a 20 minute commute to/from a NYC - NJ - CT location? Newark Office? Working 7 days a week to match a client? Maybe in Asian countries...when I took the offer to work an office was within 20 minutes, now closer to a 90 - 120 minute commute, so I have to move?! Keep your slave environment and new retirement plan, I'm out.

Layoffs included some in Watsonx, , mainframe and software automation. Hits were across the board but clearly targeted higher salaried workers (older)! And those outside of 50 miles (from their approved location ) who were told they could. work at home.

Another round is coming to Europe

Thanks god he is being driven everywhere… these people (you know who I mean) don’t know to drive and should not be on the road.

Remember he has a helicopter to use and he is driven everywhere. Totally clueless and he's just moving jobs to India. Be eye opening if anyone could find out how many thousands of jobs he promised Modi he's going to create there.

"A r v i n d should be next on the elimination list. salary is over inflated.
His entire staff should be purged."

what new product have they come up with
their salaries do not match their contributions
the management structure needs to be flat with people on top
who know more than the people below them
this looks like more of a government agency

As long as IBM mainframes are the backbone for secure, instantaneous transaction processing for banks, airlines, etc.., this company will continue to survive and thrive. Moore’s Law has hit the point of saturation, and quantum will handle more complex workloads that mainframes just can’t do. This assumes that organizations want to solve hard problems in innovative ways with innovative technologies, however we know how shortsighted most of them are for quick gains.

We’ve certainly streamlined our software portfolio over time, focusing on SaaS growth in a few key areas. Overall, IBM will continue to hold on to massive enterprise accounts that need our infrastructure day-in and day-out. Growing ecosystem gives us a way to give a home for our software products. IBM isn’t going anywhere, anytime soon.

Maybe Research has something going on ... , but they've been real quiet lately.

Research is dead. Has been for several years.

"You all should...quit as soon as you are able to find other positions out there that treat their employees better..."

This is sound advice. With all the cuts that have taken place over the years, it is hard to imagine why anyone remains...maybe they need a first job and some initial work experience, or they are lifers who are looking to hit 30. I wish them well.

Other than Z Systems, everything else seems to be either stagnant (Power and Storage), highly speculative (AI and Quantum), or close to the chopping block (Consulting for everyone except large enterprise clients). The fortunes for software are product-specific, and the fortunes for sales and service will depend on the other divisions. Maybe Research has something going on if you have the right qualifications, but they've been real quiet lately.

I see you all love working under the dictator. For the next all hands meeting, you should all bow down to the all mighty CEO.

Seriously, working for IBM is nothing short of embarrassment. Outdated managing style, outdated building, lack of benefits for staff, treat staff like they are disposable assets, constant threat of PIPs and layoffs. I can go on and on.

You all should grow some spine and quit as soon as you are able to find other positions out there that treat their employees better. Till then enjoy working for a corporation thats not far off from working conditions in 3rd world countries.

when the ceo of ibm tells you very clearly how important he thinks every employee of ibm is, you should listen.

This article sums up IBM’s new strategy nicely. NOTE IBM isn’t a growth stock anymore (mainframe isn’t growing), but it certainly is a FCF generator as Mainframe isn’t shrinking either. IBM’s core strategy is do what you have to do, to stop the mainframe shrink. For the most part, IBM has accomplished that goal. Power, storage, and regular cloud are just rounding errors vs the stop the mainframe shrink. If given favorable terms, IBM will partner any and/or all three of these off as they don’t feed the “new AI/hybrid strategy” . You can verify that by looking at where IBM is RA’ing. (CIO, F&O, infrastructure (non-mainframe), anything that doesn’t touch customers (eg back office), Watson health, weather, etc etc). If it doesn’t touch mainframe, it’s going to get trimmed at least 5% per year until it gets partnered away OR automated out. Yes it’s not pretty, but it certainly is dropping to the bottom line. AK has finally focused IBM on their Niche and it’s all about mainframe and stopping its shrink. Everything else can go as far as management is concerned.

IBM has been a trader's stock for quite some time. In other words, buy on (huge) dips and sell on all rallies. Going forward, IBM's fortunes will be less based on mainframes (a legacy market that's declining) and more based on enterprise software (Red Hat and Apptio). The problem for IBM's management and its employees is that Z System revenue is declining, and the revenue from other divisions is not enough to make up for the loss. Red Hat is propping up the company both in financial (balance sheet) and strategic terms, but it can only do so much. Their hardware divisions are cost-intensive...so much so that Power, Storage and i Systems are stagnant if not up for sale. The last maor Z System release was two years ago, and IBM's development roadmaps for AI, Quantum Computing and Hybrid Cloud are more visionary right now than "show me the money".

IBM is not a growth stock, and for employees it is not a growth company. You already know what that means.

putting 300 people at 10 shared desks. Requiring all of them to be in 3 days per week or be marked low performer. Math doesn't math.

Arvind's "this is a business" statement is a cold reality check for many IBMer's, but those of us in sales (all brands/technologies) know full well that our competitors are far more cost effective & willing to earn far less profit on key deals.

IBM's inability to break free of highly paid cliches (many of which are outside of the Exec level) and the burden of shareholder expectations means we can not compete in the real world.

The only recourse to all this is to not work as hard. If everyone keeps working very hard to deliver financial results for IBM, despite paltry ESP increases, low GDP awards, elimination of 401k match, long distance nonsensical RTO requirements, then who's really the su---r here??? What's the worst they can do to you? RA? They're already doing that to top performers in other areas of IBM!!!

AK is a fine example of a sociopath being promoted by a system that rewards his behaviour. It's his world, we just live in it. I've got stories about that douche, but I'd rather not give details that would be career limiting.

Yeah, well maybe it'd be a little easier if IBM didn't keep closing branches too. My last two branches closed, and my commute went from ~15 minutes to now 2 hours each way!
