Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Digital Product Manager Job Posting (Remote Position - Enterprise Technology Group)

I came across this job posting today and was wondering if this is a good position to consider at Ford. I heard Ford does layoffs 1-2 times every year and even high performers are let go. Is this because the company is doing poorly financially? Also will this position remain 100% remote as advertised? How will this position be for the long term? Is this a good company to work for? Any insights will be helpful. Thanks

@bnl+1rQF5KGG great tech skills are a hindrance not a help. just look around. hackett had cargo cult tech words, no actual skill. CEO! bloody he-l... at least Elon has a basic grasp of physics and more than that of software.

If you are not part of the friends and female club you don't stand a chance. You will be let go. has nothing to do with performance but all to do with if you have a friend or family member protecting you regardless of how incompetent you are at your job. you will be safe. Sorry but that’s the truth.

It's hard to tell if you're being genuine or trolling. This is a layoff site, so most of the people here have negative feelings about Ford.

But I'll answer you honestly.

If you have the right slillset for the job, and if you were to apply and interview and receive an offer - then you'll have to decide if the offer is good enough.

All conpanies have 'office politics', but I can tell you, sincerely, that Ford has the most of any company I've worked for.

What you know matters - but who you know matters far more. Again, that's probably true at a lot of places, but at Ford it becomes a back stabbing environment quickly. Maybe you'll hate that. Maybe you'll love it. I saw many people that played that game successfully. I was not one of them and it lead to my layoff in Aug 2022.

The white collar workers I knew that were the 'happiest', seemed to be the former plant workers who made the move to the office. They would show up at 6am and leave at 230pm. They would be absolute worker bees while they were there and then they were ghosts the moment the left the building. Their leaders accepted them as worker bees. That meant that they were all career GSRs (gsr is not a leadership role). But they enjoyed their lives the way they were. Looking back, I think they had the right idea. So you'll have to decide if you want to compete in the office politics to move up or settle into a comfortable routine. Neither choice is wrong - just figure out which is right for you.

Just look out for yourself - make sure you like the salary and rest of the offer details and then decide.

Ford is a decent company to work for. The benefits are good and many of the managers are competent. There are layoffs maybe once every other year (typically following a management shakeup). Usually the targets are people who have been in the same position for a long time, have maxed out in their salary band and show no interest in moving on, or lower performers. I believe the position you mentioned is likely an LL6, which would shield you from most layoffs. Typically, if they are downsizing a department they will let the GSRs go but move the LL6+ to another position. They do layoffs because they say the company is bloated (which is true) but the issue is the company is bloated with middle management, not individual contributors, but when middle management is making the layoff decisions they chose to save their own. So the problem never really gets fixed and there is just fewer people to do the same work. That said, if you do decent work and are ambitious, you can pretty easily keep your job. If you are a manager, keep your team lean and highly productive. The company does good financially when compared to other manufacturing companies, and it is well protected from foreign competition, as auto manufacturing is always a focus of the government. The executives constantly compare us to software companies including Tesla, which in comparison have way more investor dollars chasing after them. The large growth focus in the past few years has been on software and tech so you will find those jobs to be plentiful and pay higher than most at the company. From what I hear, if you’re hired in a remote position and you live outside SE Michigan, you will likely remain remote, but if you live in SE Michigan, you will probably need to RTO in the near future. Overall, it’s a decent company to work for if you’re looking to climb the latter, but if you are looking to do the same job for 10 years, may be better to look at smaller companies.

Looks like great technical skills is not enough to survive at this company. If the employees are so much frustrated then this company cannot be a good company. The frustration will have severe impact on your health. Get out soon and save yourself. There are much better jobs in America!

Ask yourself “what digital product does Ford offer?”
That will give you the answer, “no.”

Ford is a great company to work for, at least if you’re a member of the Ford family. All others beware!
