Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

New ATT role models

AT&T is proudly featuring some dude on the Intranet who used to be homeless and now rose thru T ranks and carries a big vanity title of “associate director”:). There was an external article about him too. For all I know he may be a stand up guy, but AT&T had different role models in the past.
For example Kernighan and Ritchie, inventors of UNIX (that everyone makes money on, but not AT&T). Shannon - inventor of information theory. Penzias, the physicist.
Those were the days…

Well, ATT needs to tell the rest of the story . . . this guy's career has peaked because his is not located in a hub that ATT cares about. So, when he tried to change jobs AT&T told him to move at his own risk, and then after moving, he was let go. The good thing is that he was already homeless once so he was able to adapt pretty easily to being jobless and homeless again.

It’s a 100% a made up story he’s been preaching to any one who listens for a decade.

Still your venom is misplaced. Maybe this gentleman will get new opportunities now beyond AT&T. It’s nice to have a few good stories about AT&T out in the public to counterbalance the bad ones that have dominated lately.

Being more precise in your criticism is always the better path. As a side note, those of you who constantly bring up political figures in your rants, just fyi, everyone tunes out when you mention them. Save that sh$t for twitter.

AT&T launched through the ranks to make themselves look good, period. T needed somebody to make T look like they're a company that doesn't hold anyone back, it's a company of great opportunity! I remember when he was first hired, suddenly, he's the AT&T poster boy for opportunity within...riiiiiiiight! A homeless person that was given the red carpet treatment, because...? It's all a bunch of BS!

T is lost. Employees dont even know what the company stands for anymore. Execs played down the outage so much and lost more respect of their employees. The attitude from Officers was “everyone makes mistakes” we were awesome at fixing it.

More root cause than the high level would have been appreciated and confidence that it’s not going to happen again. Maybe leadership underestimates how many people/customers ask us as employees what we think… what happened and if we’re confident it won’t happen again.
This is being handled poorly.

Brilliant woman. But I guess AT&T didn’t value her. She is at Google now.

JFC , First we are not that AT&T anymore, we haven’t been that since the 90s, although we still make many contributions to the telecom and wireline industries. Maybe read a book or two on our history and you would understand why those things don’t exist in the same way they did in the past. It’s not just what happened in the last 10 years, it started 4 decades ago.
And second, why put down another employee who you don’t know, it’s classless and you should probably be out working on yourself instead of taking shots at others. I don’t know the guy but good for him taking responsibility for his life and not blaming others like most of you seem to do. Bi--h about something that is an actual problem, conserve your ones and zeros for better arguments at the minimum.

Bring on the downvotes, most of you lost your self reflection and drive years ago.

“ And don't forget Ken Thomson!”

They don’t need people like Ken anymore. Everything needs to be standard and repeatable”. Yeah, let’s make d-mb pipes and Apple, Google etc will make money over them!
At least Ken retired when they were still paying retirement benefits.

I believe this guy caught AT&T off guard when he went to People with his story. Can anyone confirm. Then AT&T ran with it like it’s some kind of news anyone cares about

And don't forget Ken Thomson! And the C programming language! Thompson also invented UTF8 encoding. Those were the days of true innovation. And Ken Thompson, after retiring from Bell Labs, continued to invent. He is a co-inventor of Go (which he designed while in his mid 70's) and still works at Google as an Advisor in his 80's. Take that, ageist Stankey! I wonder if some higher level bureaucrat was following these esteemed computer scientists around to check on their office attendance status?

That caliber of employee hasn’t been at T for decades. A lot of Connection awards are still given out though.

He’s one of the lowest paid AD’s in the company as well (sales). TSR caps out on the high end at about what an IC3 1B manager makes. A real rags to riches story, LOL!!!! Never mind the thousands of other employees here (both craft and management) that have persevered through much tougher situations than this guy.
