Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

QUESTION: Ratings on year end review

For anyone laid off in 2024 and told your position had been eliminated, did you receive a ‘partially met’ rating which according to the updated HR policy prevents you from being rehired by BNYM?

But isn’t that the way that it should work? If you can’t do your job and get displaced because of it then why would you expect to be rehired? Job search for a position that fits your aptitude and you and your future employer will get along much better.

Serious question…. Are you an 8th grade girl with the vapors who has just experienced a “bring your kids to work” day? If so, that’s fairly understandable so no worries.

Now if you’re an actual adult worker at the Bank you definitely need to talk to a psychiatrist and likely get some meds in the SRI category. Sorry to be the bearer of this advice. Be aware though… when the devils leave the angels do as well. A therapist is wise to contact as well. Unfortunately it is hard to find a good therapist as most of them are in the field because they are inward looking themselves and cannot see out of it.

So, a good psychiatrist and a solid well balanced and empathetic therapist.

As a famous short story once said, “Doctor, I’m rooting for the piano.

I was new and bullied to death, mobbed by colleagues, and gaslit by very unclear boss about a project I volunteered/was volunteered for I finally pulled through with and successfully uplifted. Colleagues wanted group meetings with managers to pick on everything wrong I was doing (typo, font, real or imagined) and it had to be in front of management. It was eat or be eaten - that vicious. My biggest te--orizer is still there.
So, in 2021 I got a "partial meets". I stayed and "met expectations" ever since.

Am I transferrable or rehirable?

Stop applying here NOW. You have a clear message on that. Right now you need to consider your strengths and your weaknesses and make sure that any references that you have for a job search outside of the Bank are unaware of any issues.

As always, self examination is the key towards moving on in career and relationships.

@1rte

You’re confusing symptom with cause. You had a bad review. Your option is to correct performance or start a job search. Whether you agree or not, your management team is unified on this, and as such it doesn’t matter.

My advice. Read the review that you don’t agree with. Ignore the acknowledging issue.

This is not an evil manager. This is likely a wake up call. Learn from your performance issues and start fresh somewhere else.

I always advise honest self reflection and if honest, it always works to your benefit.

Poster: Since being laid off in January 2024 I’ve applied for numerous positions where I’m justly qualified only to receive a rejection email shortly after applying.

Recently I applied for a position and asked a former colleague to contact the hiring manager as a reference for me. The hiring manager told my former colleague that because of the ‘bogus’ partially met rating, an HR policy prevents me from being rehired. Also anyone still with the company receiving a partially met rating in their year end review was unable to post for another position within BNYM.

Maybe someone can validate this for us all.

Ok @5rpo, fess up what’s the issue…?

Apparently you’re not qualified for the positions to which you’re applying. Why not skill up and job search? It’s a very hot hiring economy and a very nice way to get way ahead of Carter, er… Biden’s hyperinflation.

41 repeats the same tired old thing every day on every thread… Claiming that no layoffs are happening other than failure to comply with RTO.
Look through the various threads, and you’ll see them littered with this nonsense

@2woo

But nobody here has ever said anything like that. You are struggling with reading comprehension.

What HAS been written is that the Bank would prefer to displace workers for RTO issues, as those employees are considered to have quit so they don’t give them severance or SUB. For layoffs however, they do give a package.

Wow, talk about a total lack of reading comprehension. Nobody here has ever said anything like “displacements are only happening for people in non compliance of RTO.”

Not even close.

I guess that I’m missing something here.

Why are ex-employees whom are barred by HR for possibility of rehire trying desperately to get back in. That’s crazy.

I was a 10 yr Oriskany - left in 2023 for about 3 months rehired in a new role/dept. Let go along with several others (many seasoned good workers) in March 2024. Got a partial met for the Goals when EOY reviews were done although I was told at that time “it was not anything against me because of the timing in the department” — although I call BS because a 2nd rehire that came back a month after me (was a previous manager in payments) conveniently “met all his goals” despite only having 5 months and he was gone a longer period of time). Wasn’t told I was not eligible for rehire in the future and nothing on the separation docs indicate this.

In my last 12 years of bnym experience, getting a partially met and am no longer in the company now and offcourse I am at a much better place.
I must say that there was no rulebook in this Bank. Today they implement something tomorrow if there's a regime change that rule changes. It's the same as whoever takes the authority changes what blunders the previous CEO did . BNY gets into this cycle of correcting each other's mistakes a lot and show it as an achievement. Tomorrow if Robin and his cronies leave and a new CEO takes over he will change all the hasty and stupid decisions did Robyn take with the help of McKinsey that ripped of this company from inside out.

*Quick edit

I am referring to the troll who keeps saying that displacements are only happening for people in non compliance of RTO or as he/she refers to as “slackers”. ENOUGH.

I was thinking about this recently:

What if the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) were to perform random audits on displacement decisions - especially for any organization with multiple complaints and of high risk profile surrounding labor matters?

What if I were to go to the EEOC and share I was let go in Spring 2023 after only 8 months of working in the Jersey City office WITH severance and a pretext of restructure? Only for the role to be reshuffled a few months later with a title below and a few 000s below salary? And what if there were concerns raised on rac**sm during my employment?

There should be stronger oversight by the EEOC. And if the EEOC were to investigate labor concerns at random, rest assured an authentic culture of integrity will start to form.

Oh, to the individual that is trolling here insisting the organization is letting go of people for non-compliance of RTO - enough. Your perspective is of no value here nor representative of reality.

i was laid off in December a few years ago. My mid year in August was a below expectations. In over 30 years of employment I had never received a below expectations rating. I did not know that this precluded me from beong rehired by BNYM. I had in the back of my mind that since no improvement plan was ever discussed or presented to me, that i had grounds for a lawsuit. I decided it was not worth the risk of putting my sub payments at risk. I did think the BE rating was a sh---y thing to i they knew they were going to eliminate my position prior to year end.

How does it matter ? Bnym doesn't appeal to me much to be a potential employer that I should be rehired. Who wants to go back to them with this horrible experience. No technology, arrogant leaders, totalitarian management, micro managers , fake risk culture, overpaid vps .

Let me get this straight - you can’t be rehired if your last rating was partially met? Does anyone know if this is if you ever had a partial (old BE) or just if your last rating was that level?

And, the company requires a forced 10% of the company as partial or below, requiring managers to pick a victim that is probably more likely based on whose work is critical vs true performance - and these people can never be rehired?

Poster: I received a ‘partially met’ rating tied to a project that had no issues, was performing well ahead of other LOBs progress on a corporate initiative - there was absolutely no reason for this rating. I adamantly fought this and was told I could take it up with HR. I knew there was no way I could get this changed. I had one meeting with HR and was laid off roughly 10 days later. HR will not follow-up.

My advice. Do not acknowledge a review that you don’t agree with. I was told acknowledging receipt didn’t imply agreement although there is no longer an area on the form to apply comments.

This evil manager wanted to be sure I couldn’t return to BNYM. Just evil.

I'm interested in hearing an answer on this since I was laid off in late 2023 while in the middle of the year end review comments. It's probably more beneficial for me since I never had to acknowledge my last review.
