Thread regarding Ford layoffs

Declining F150 sales

Sales of the main revenue generator F150 is declining, there are thousands of them sitting in lots all over waiting for “quality checks” and not getting any newer. They are reimplementing “stair steps” to dealers, which reflect the lack of customers issue.

Ford needs to focus on MAKING MONEY. Not getting taxpayer money. Selling quality, affordable vehicles that people want to buy.

My suggestions for immediate profitability improvement:

Eliminate Model e. Have two divisions: consumer and commercial.
Produce the vehicles and services consumers and business customers ask for.
Sell the train station to the highest bidder,
Eliminate Ford Next and let new business ideas percolate naturally.
Allow side businesses like clothing lines and canopy security (and the train station since nobody will buy it) but every one of them is required to provide a profit and loss statement, for ACCOUNTABILITY!

I know Farley and the entire executive team, HR, the Freep and WSJ all read this site. Let me know what you think of my ideas. I’d do the CEO job for half of what Farley is being paid.

Actually TVM shouldn't be required as a stand-alone function. Ford has not had cradle to grave ownership of programs for decades. Some newbie D&R will get design responsibility, may or may not launch the vehicle, and usually leaves within a year or so of launch if they manage to stay. No one hangs on long enough to fix the design they put out there. Move onto the next program while old one is still steaming. Continuous improvement and learning from one's mistakes is not a thing at Ford.

Nowadays the youngsters want be promoted within a few years of joining, you can all checked LinkedIn and see which folks get promoted to LL6, LL5 . Many w/o relevant experience or experience in any core facet of the company i.e. design, manufacturing etc. Now program management is a career path. Same thing is seen at higher levels too. Quality LL2 joined Ford being a career JD Power guy, the Quality Czar .

The beginning of the end is when sales of the main profit center is declining year over year. Ford has nothing but the F150. Lincoln isn’t making it, EVs aren’t selling or profitable, the Train Station won’t ever be profitable, t-shirt sales won’t pay for the postage on the vehicle recall notices, nobody is paying for Blue Cruise subscriptions except Ford Marketing, Ford Next has been failing for years and Canopy Security isn’t selling because it doesn’t work, constant recalls are chasing prospective customers away, and Ford is almost $100 Billion in debt in 2023 (up 12% from 2022).

The Ford family stock is the only thing keeping this company out of bankruptcy.

“Typically, stair-step incentives allow dealers to receive one set of bonuses when achieving a sales objective, with additional bonuses for exceeding their goals. In February and March, Ford offered $750 per unit for selling the target number of 2023 F-150 pickups and $1,500 per unit once the target was met.”

The problem is if they don’t sell enough, there are clawbacks.

Stair stepping is somewhat like having a bidding process for a vehicle. Essentially the dealers are going to auction off some stock to reduce inventory levels. You will see vehicles listed as AUCT-consumer only. Once listed, the vehicles have a fixed time for all bids to be placed. The highest bid would win. Stair stepping means bids typically start artificially low and gradually increase. Of course the sticker MSRP is known before bidding. There is also no low or high limit to bids.

“Quality takes time. So stop complaining when sales are slower for the right reason.”

Quit possibly the most dense statement I’ve seen here, and that’s saying a lot.

Ford has been around for 120+ years. How long is it supposed to take? Lol

@1lse+1rSoe8Gh Quality is an issue because senior management took the easy way vs doing it right the first time. Programs like TVM and the out of control complexity had a major impact on the quality at the oval.
Glad I retired a few years ago. Took the lump sum .. No confidence in the senior management team.

What does reimplementing “stair steps” to dealers mean?
