Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Location “strategy” is nothing more than layoffs in disguise

Look, we all know the company is bloated with redundancies from many past mergers, and would benefit from a moderate downsizing of some positions. But instead of rolling up their sleeves and doing the hard work of identifying where to make needed cuts, management prefers to take the approach of laying off dedicated employees due to arbitrary rules such as location.

This will not be a cost savings as people with many years of experience and institutional knowledge will need to be replaced.. so the company will incur both hiring costs and severance. Most people who are remote or non-core location are highly tenured and have earned the right to work in a different location, so the people who are affected are the very same people that the company cannot afford to lose.

We are a number to them. Cheaper to keep her does not apply here.

If there's no downside and 'anyone can do it' no one sane would spend waaaay more than necessary by employing people in NY or SF. The only possible way to justify the expense and the legal nightmare that is Cali / NY, is it the people there are able to make massively outsized contributions via crazy talent/performance. Since that isn't necessary here, I guess we can go ahead and shut down Hudson Yards tomorrow.

Location is not arbitrary, but considered objective from a Legal Defense standpoint. The company only cares about getting sued for discrimination related to layoffs so they pick the most unassailable criteria possible. They then rely on the "gratitude" of the survivors when it comes to everyone's workload doubling b/c they displaced good performers and didn't streamline any redundant or pointless operations.

Also, let's be real, for 90% of the jobs here, you only need an average level of talent so if some top performers are lost in the shuffle, there's really no downside to "The Firm".

WF did lose a lot of talent when my TEC team was displaced.
As a tenured employee- I enjoyed my job managed to ignore the toxicity.

Nothing HY has done has been about anything but exterminating the domestic WF workforce. If you think being in any hub is "safe" you need to wake up. "Location strategy is nothing more than a single rung on a ladder to the unemployment line. The minute we are headed into a few locations, the new excuse for the cull will be rolled out. On and on it will go until no one is left but execs in HY and low wage worker bees in I&P.
