Thread regarding IBM layoffs

RTO for non-manager...

Still so much confusion about RTO for non-managers... The CEO clearly stated that RTO is for Execs and Managers only... yet, the lower management ranks, VP and under still claim that RTO is also for employees that are within 50-miles from an IBM office.

Comments? What is the truth? Almost looks like a conspiration from the lower rank management...
If you are non-manager, are you going to the office 3 days a week?

Simple solution Just go in and have a successful slip and fall. Then go see Dr Summeroff and find a Lawyer while you look for a new job. If a few thousand people do that and they'll get the picture real quick.

The problem I have is different: My co-workers want to work remotely.
As I come to the office, I am asked to do their job: Do this, get that or explain what is going on.

Deal with it or move on. You're an at-will employee and the International Bowel Movement will do whatever it wants and get away with it, because that's the world we live in today.

told it applies to all, period end of story regardless of location. So, I live outside the 50 miles to the nearest office/assigned office. I ain't moving to the location, $$$ housing, family considerations etc. Will I get mileage reimbursement having to drive 150+ miles daily to work? The mandate relocate or be fired/leave is kind of anti HR, no?

So much confusion... for sure, as a non-manager IBMer, I have never received any e-mails from IBM stating that I needed to show up at the office 3 days a week because I am within 50 miles of an IBM office. This is the real problem... it only has been stated verbally on phone calls, webex, etc... WTF?

The RTO is not for every division/group in IBM. We were told that if you were hired as a remote employee then the RTO does not apply to you. Only apply to those who went remote because of COVID.

The position (whether anyone likes it or not) has been since late last year the all employees within a 50 mile radius be in the office a minimum of 3 days a week. This has been true for all employees regardless of whether they were a manager or not. The management RTO that was announced was that all managers and execs regardless of distance must RTO. This means that managers and execs who were outside the 50 mile radius must relocate to within the 50 mile radius or separate from the company. I don’t think that was ever unclear the new position was simply that managers must all be in the office going forward. What happens with non-managers who are outside the 50 mile radius is still to be seen however.

So first off, there was official guidance on RTO in software group delivered via a blog post. So, there is no conspiracy where lower level management enforcing this on their own. They are just doing what their up-line is telling them to do. The mechanism for enforcing this is different depending on the type of employee. The more formal communication to managers and execs is to just weed out the managers that are not towing the company line. If the manager is unwilling to RTO then they figure those managers will not pass this down to the lower levels. So they were formally warned en masse to toe the line or else. Management of RTO at the individual contributor level is being placed into the hands of their first line managers. It’s not that the first lines agree with or want to enforce this. They are just doing what they are being told to do in order to keep their jobs. RTO is coming for everyone. You can accept it or move on but if you fight it you could very well end up on the street.
