Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

We need smart setup and innovation

Just laying off people in endless rounds will not make this company do better. That’s the pedestrian way of showing more money on the accounts in the short run. This place needs serious management with good ideas, and innovation, and then some more innovation. Which will never happen.

Most Distinguished and above are politicians, not technologist.

The first part of the definition of politics from Wikipedia is:

"Politics (from Ancient Greek πολιτικά (politiká) 'affairs of the cities') is the set of activities that are associated with making decisions in groups, ...

DEs have to drive big decisions drawn from the experiences of large collections of people, so by definition they need to be highly skilled in both politics and technology.

I’ve tried pushing some innovative developments. The biggest problem is that there are 8,239 people in Cisco who safeguard their jobs by saying “NO!” to everything, and they all get a say. The bureaucracy in Cisco is stunning. I have receipts. It’s taken just one outsourced contractor to stop a currently running innovation project because she’s convinced we need to place our data in a system that doesn’t exist. 4 months now, and still no.
We cannot even get funding to develop basic table stakes features let alone take on a project with risk, and anything with risk will never be permittted.

Unfortunately, we don’t have the talent to innovate internally. Most Distinguished and above are politicians, not technologist.
