We're both long term, excellent employees so no it's not performance based, just age discrimination, outright.

I've seen layoffs at every company I've worked for over many decades and aside of losing good people through shutting down whole groups I've never seen them eject "excellent employees."

I've also seen a lot of old people at every company who not only didn't improve their skills but by working in a narrow area actually had many of the skills they did have atrophy, and like the proverbial frog in a pot had no clue what happened to themselves. Part of job jumping is bringing different perspectives and ideas to new companies while deriving more skills from those companies for the next jump. Along with this comes a far more realistic perspective on the value of various talents and skills which change significantly over time.

The good news is I know over 60s who are merely good, not "excellent" and they got new jobs in under two months so they were able to pocket the rest of their packages as bonuses, they're making more money and they're happy to be actually growing.

Two of us 50+ were laid off in my group, two 20 something DEI's were hired to replace us and are now in the group before we're even gone. But wait, I thought we were LR'd due to our positions being eliminated due to restructuring. Still lots of useless directors need to be laid off and improve the OPEX
All these openings are replaced with H1B contractors who are waiting to jump in and grab. In some groups some GC/citizens let go because H1B can survive and replace

most of the open reqs listed on the cisco job board are all from Bangladesh India so the OP is kinda right. Makes sense though, even JP says "we need to invest more into India"

Fact in Meraki, several 50+ laid off in my group and replaced by an equal number of DEI hired to start mid-March. Like someone else said, sleazy as can be, but not illegal.

Main issue in Bay Area is companies paying high salaries that cannot be sustained over longer period. Hence the cycle of layoffs and outsourcing.

There is enough talent in this country but university fees and rents and housing prices are out of control.

The bullet point list that shows up on the Google machine is:

  • A valid job offer from a U.S. employer for a role that requires specialty knowledge.
  • Proof of a bachelor's degree or equivalent experience in that field.
  • Your employer must show that there is a lack of qualified U.S. applicants for the role.

Kids with a generic bachelor's degree straight out of school and no special skills nor any domain specific knowledge hardly qualify for the first point.

I'm all for bringing in real specialists for whom there are no equivalents. The value one superstar can bring far exceeds the average employee so they must be paid far above scale, and there should be no limitation on their ability to change employers during the term of the VISA so a company can't trap them, which is the whole reason international companies would rather pay more for an H-1b in the US than simply hire them in their home country.

Nothing’s changed in the past 7 years. Tech companies just change tactics to misuse the H-1B program and in the process abuse immigrant workers and American workers alike. It is past time to shut this system down — and if there is something better, make it happen.

Where are the young whip-smart attorneys wishing to make a name for themselves to expose this abuse and show it as fraud? You’ve got a willing SCOTUS that might just hear a case like that.

Cisco is not breaking the law. It's unethical and sleazy but not illegal.

They can layoff thousands of Americans with families and replace them with H1b workers or contractors. It's not illegal.

I've watched plenty of family people with mortgages replaced by a contractor that doesn't receive a 401k or health insurance. Welcome to corporate america
