Even though it had a 50-70 history and did work for the IBM employee, I never bought into the "cradle to grave" nanny corporate silliness. Even when it "worked", there were expected behaviors, strict dress codes (that "sea of white shirts" - with pocket protectors- at the office). Ross Perot's EDS was even more intrusive with his dopey uniform of winged-tipped lace shoes, blue pinstripe suits and, on a personal level, they "needed" to know if you were even "living in sin" with a partner. So - for some soul selling on your part, you were in if you wanted. That worked for some; it's not working any more.
I've consulted for large corporations including IBM. I just kept the IBM mindset (It's still out there) at the office, had a laugh over it, and kept plying my consulting skills with all of them.

Digital Equipment Corporation used to be like this also. The founder, Ken Olsen, refused to layoff employees and the board forced him to step down. Ken would actually go out in the field and visit with us ground troops in a flannel shirt.
