Manager Span & Control

Anyone know if Span & Control is still a thing? I recall a few years ago that managers were being let go if they had less than 7 people under them. Does that still happen?

I just saw a new manager hired with 4 direct reports. New manager - because the manager above them was "overextended" with 12 directs. I saw managers with teams of 6 demoted a few years back supposedly under spans and layers, while peers remained managers with 4 reports. Clearly spans and layers is just an excuse for senior leaders to sc--w select people over.

Yes, happened to my previous manager.

At this point, the more reasons they can have to reduce the headcounts, the better for them.

I think it depends. Will they let people hire…

Yes, it’s incremental. Affected my group last year.

Maybe in your group. In mine, 90% of the problems come from the recently hired managers / directors that have no idea what they are doing.

It was a big joke. There is no way corrupt and lazy managers here will relinquish power. The only way to obtain efficiency is to get rid of managers and directors from the old regime.

I you haven't figured it out yet....yes for some, not addressed with others. Leadership continues to roll out plans that are targeting some, but not those they favor.
