Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

Leaving Soon

If you knew you were either going to be let go, or found a new job, what are some of the things you should do to maximize the little benefits we have? Use up all the Work From Anywhere? Use up sick days?

Take any floating holidays
Take any carryover unused vacations from 2023
Take any existing accrued vacation in 2024

As none of the above will be paid when you leave.

If you hvae a flexible spending account then anything you leave in it when you leave you will lose. But on the other hand you can spend the full year amount even if you’ve only contributed a few pay cycles… and you won’t have to pay it back. https://fsastore.com/articles/learn-what-if-i-leave-my-company-or-retire-and-still-have-money-in-my-fsa-account.html

Use office resources.

I used all my sick days to pack up for my move to my next job.

Make contacts with the employees you liked.

Save any paperwork and go through corporate policies to make sure you are aware of everything.

Good luck!

Take as many sick days and use up the earned vacation days.

  1. Delete random files and folders but not all of them. It’s a shame you won’t see the impact but I’m sure it will still be funny
  1. Put a po-p in the microwave.

I appreciate your question and the attitude to make the most of the last few pages of this chapter. My recommendations:

  1. Meet in-person/virtually with those individuals that have been key to your journey at this place. You don’t need to share the update, but rather let the session serve as a nurturing-relationship meet. Not just for career purposes but also for your authentic gratitude - this will also allow you to close out the chapter in a positive mindset. Depending on the relationship context, you may want to share a personal email or ensure you connect on LinkedIn.
  1. From a practical perspective, don’t have anything at your desk. On your last day, don’t be carrying too much or any baggage.
  1. Do a personal audit of your emails/ mental walkthrough of critical meetings / interactions.
  1. On your last day - if let go or quitting - keep your cool. Listen and pay attention to all the details of this day. No matter how toxic your management / colleagues potentially are, show grace - for no one more than yourself. Depending on context, ask where you can leave formal feedback.
  1. Treat yourself to a self care afternoon/ evening right after (day of or day after). This means different things for different people. The next day of my last page at BNYM, I went to a workout and treated myself to a nice massage. Breathe.

I hope great things come for you in your next chapter!
