Thread regarding Dell Inc. layoffs

RTO - people are going be let go regardless of hybrid/remote status

The leadership in my org is encouraging us to choose remote and many of us are. There’s strength in numbers, so don’t be afraid to make that choice if it’s better for you.

The company is going to be making huge cuts at will and people are going be let go regardless of hybrid/remote status. Take care of your well being now and try not to get too crazy over all this. They are not worth your heartache.

I wholeheartedly agree with this, @dmt+1roQqJgF.

They hired me for a remote position. Never came up in the hiring process that this position would go hybrid in a few months. Then all of a sudden the announcement came and I would have to spend hours commuting to an office that did not even have anyone else in my business unit. Dell wanted me to drive, increasing my cost of living, reducing my time for either working on their issues or work life balance, all so I could get on Zoom at a facility they could get a tax break on. I gave my notice. Its not about going into an office but rather the way they go about it and the lies they tell. Further stop advertising remote positions on LinkedIn - everything should be hybrid. Make sure that talent acquisition is up front with prospect that you will have to drive somewhere and if you really are remote - you won't have an upward path at Dell. I personally see it as their loss. They need talent but they think they will find it in pockets around their facilities and they have already wrung that well dry.

The problem with most companies today, Dell included is that their executive staff couldn’t create an original thought if their life depended on it. All Dell does is go with the trend. My absolute favorite though is in ISG they want to make huge software investments now but our leadership has no idea - none about how it works. I’m tired of being run by Bain and 25 year olds with zero work experience. I’m also tired of seeing out sets of executives lie through their teeth.

Our executives need to realize something. They’re nothing, nobodies.

Nobody respects them because they can’t make good decisions.

They’re in a role because they got lucky. That’s it.

@1qyw+1roAU5GV: This site is managed by 3-letter agencies in cahoots with employers, in case you didn't know. Stay within their limits and you'll be fine.

The consequences of staying remote are laid out for everyone to see. You're limiting your promotion opportunities and you're first in line for reorg if one occurs. Can they speed this up if at all possible? You would think that promotions are a regular occurrence the way they are being dangled above us.

I'm staying remote. I'm also stopping logging onto calls out of hours. If they're inflexible then I'm inflexible. If they need someone outside normal working hours then hire someone for it.

P.S. What's with the posting limit on the site? You can only post once a week or something now?

"your leaders encouraging you to go remote, I'd look very closely at their motives, because their leadership is not encouraging that at all."

dell execs are so afraid of a remote selection in the 40-50%. it will be pie to their faces.
expect them to renege and backtrack on more in phase II

“if you're not happy about where your employer wants to work, find an employer that will allow you to work from where you like.”

But don’t you see? We already had. Aside from the obvious inconvenience of having the company go back on its word, it’s stepping back on all the reasons for it, too. We work better and are more inclusive as a remote-friendly company. This new turn of events disproportionately affects people who live in remote areas, caretakers, people with disabilities, and more. The abrupt about-face undermines everything the company claimed to have stood for. The lack of integrity is astounding.

And your disbelief that adults use this site to complain reeks of self importance and arrogance. If Dell was more transparent about layoffs we wouldn’t be forced to find information here. If it’s not useful to you, then don’t read it or contribute.

The problem is not dell wanting RTO.
It is dell reneging on everything that was promised and said for 3 years to their employees about remote work.

It is about being hired for remote and then being told 'oh, we change our minds.

It is dell selling off land, building, amenities and now wanting to sardine people in less than half the space.

I have never seen a corporation go out of its way to skim from its employees as much as Dell has. Will you be pitching tents in the parking lots for more office space?

What's even more hilarious and disingenuous is you trying to come off as some sort of unbiased, concerned passer-by to this forum.

I'm in middle management. My leadership has also encouraged people to choose remote. I guess if this person is HR or a senior leader, I'd genuinely encourage them to communicate through the management chains just how severe the consequences will be for remote employees. And if we're somehow forbidden from encouraging remote, it may be a good idea to actually hear that from senior leaders. Being vague isn't helping anyone.

It reads like a post from a senior executive. Or maybe someone from HR.

I am curious as to how you’d know that. As a member of leadership that IS encouraging employees to choose remote, I’ve heard nothing from anyone above me one way or the other.

Look I understand that you're upset about RTO. I am too, I love working remote. But at the end of the day its Dell's decision where they want you to work from, it's not like you're doing it for free, they are paying you a salary. If you're not happy about where your employer wants to work, find an employer that will allow you to work from where you like. I genuinely feel it's a very straightforward scenario. I just found this website today and find it very odd, that full grown adults come on here to talk about how much they hate the place and gossip about the decisions being made at their workplace. You're not being forced to work there, if you're good at what you do you'll find another job easily. As to your leaders encouraging you to go remote, I'd look very closely at their motives, because their leadership is not encouraging that at all.

Yes. Hybrids will think they are safe but they are not.

When cuts come it comes from most senior and expensive no matter where you are.

To me this is akin to being ushered onto a reservation with the promise of safety.
WE all know how that turned out.

Don't let them harm your well being or cause heartache by forcing you to do something you don't want to do.

It's better to die on your feet than live on your knees.
