Thread regarding Cisco Systems Inc. layoffs

Cisco is the company it once was only in name

Everything else has changed for the worse. There's no point in staying here unless you're close to retirement.

If you and your managers can still get away with working two jobs or working 10 hours a week then why not stay since management has no idea what happens outside their home office mansions

The company has been doing acquisitions for 30 years, while during this time failed in so many development efforts. I don't see the problem being changes at Cisco but a complete lack of change at Cisco to tackle the new growth areas where they can differentiate themselves.

Most of Cisco's business has been receiving a packet, reading and writing bits in headers and sending the modified packet. As they've been forced to scale they should have finally eliminated all the order N to the eighth algorithms. There is also reading some registers to check temperature, fan speed and power supplies. It's basic bit bashing stuff even when it is at phenomenal scale. As merchant silicon continues to level the playing field this is not where the value add of the future will be, and with four broken operating systems of technical debt Cisco is moving into the future with a giant anchor around their neck.

If you look at what seem to be the future technologies of networking, management and security, you need much greater development, systems and domain skills than Cisco has, either in its development staff or its managerial and technical leadership. In the old days you just had to figure out how to get IOS to program a forwarding plane and you successfully integrated an acquisition. Management and security are too complex to just whip up a shim layer to join acquisitions and I doubt anyone there truly understands what this means.
