Thread regarding Nike Inc. layoffs

Nike used to be "cool" but the kids don't care about anymore

My kids haven't asked for any Nike product since Pandas were a thing. The cool kids at their schools all wear Hoka, ALO, ON, Vans, Crocs, New Balance, LULU, or adidas. Nike is what the homeless people and criminals wear. The SLT went all in on the sneakerhead trend and forgot about sport. They preach about supporting women, but their actions don't show it. They think signing Kai Cenat is going to work out positively LOL. Just burning dollars instead of keeping colleagues employed and signing humans that actually have a positive impact on the world. NOCTA is a flop. Travis was only relevant because of the Kardashians. #1 can only be #1 for so long. I think "we are all witnesses" like Lebron said. New Balance is "swiftly" catching up and the rest of brands are laughing as we fall apart. Reebok has Shaq and AI as President and Vice President to connect to sport and culture. We have rich old white money all over the board trying to connect to the "culture" as they continue to make Nike uncool. Little Jordan is ki-ling Jordan brand with the trophy room and TMZ tabloids. MJ doesn't even care about his brand anymore. He's too rich. The ship is sinking. We need leadership who actually cares and isn't there to just collect their millions. Retire and go spend that money. Leave the important work for those of us who care and need a job.

I know JD is sociopath who seemingly gets off on tanking companies but also you guys are being a bunch of babies. There’s a sh-t ton of bad and boring work coming from all teams right now. Mid or worse. Boo hoo.. go work for Adidas and see how exciting it is in 2 years when those of us with great performance ratings and some resilience keep it moving in the right direction. Go take your no show socks and Travis Scott 1s and work at Aramark or something nerds. There’s business for grownups to handle.

And anecdotal stories aren’t helpful right now. My kIdS… blah blah blah.

The younger generation is generally less brand obsessed than their parents and grandparents. Hello Gen X, eye roll. But Nike isn’t going away. It’s just going to have to evolve. This new gen also deeply cares about the environment and human rights.

Our VPs and LT subscribe to BOOMER leadership logic, and it’s why we aren’t able to truly innovate. These leaders are tanking this company right before our eyes and they cannot figure out that it’s them.

End the bullsh-t platitudes “bEtTeR tOgEtHeR” and admit RTO failed miserably. Give your employees their flexibility and autonomy back and you will see loyal talent staying through the bumps in the road.

GET RID OF THE dinosaur leaders that our new consumers do not relate to.

Prioritize sustainability, authenticity, and innovation.

It has been almost ten years since we restructured the company to better focus on Women. How is it that we’re having the exact same conversations today, with seemingly no progress made?

The day an all hands meeting focused on an article in Vogue and a conversation about Drake and his jet ski was also the day we stopped serving athletes! Nike serves athletes, not egos, not fashion editors, not music videos. Under JD and his group - let's call them Friends of .... FOJD+HON, they have failed to serve!

Do your member how everyone suddenly became servant-leaders upon JD's arrival... what a load of horse p-o-p-o!

i think the point is it’s not about how big these competitor brands are as a %ttl Nike it’s about the loss of market share TO these brands over the past 2 years due to poor leadership that has not been footwear focused. The loss spread out over these brands equates to millions in lost rev for Nike. So that’s what’s not cool these days. Also…it’s not just a running issue for those of us paying attention

So this is why over half the kids in school wear product with Nike logos on them? Because they hate the brand? Nike's demographic for shoes starts around early 20's.

Several years ago, I was at Moda Center people watching (mostly footwear watching) while waiting for the concert to start. 90% of folks were wearing Adidas. You walk around in the malls these days, no one is really wearing Nikes. At most a few AJ1s. It's become a Boomer brand.

Sports aren’t the only way for kids to be cool, times have evolved.

Major Nike growth and popularity of 80s and 90s coincided with the cool of sport. MJ, Deion, Bo, Pippen, etc. Cool kids in 2024 now laugh off LeBron, he’s corny. Jokic, Mahomes, Luka - athletes just aren’t tastemakers anymore with social.

LOL.. OP has some points, but a bit inaccurate in other spots. There are certainly more options of brands taking up market share. Additionally, for the rebuttal, don't look at the "size of NB," look at WHO'S wearing them. As small as they are in comparison, they have definitely broken through to the market that Nike covets and has owned for years.

Also, yes Panda's were a thing, but never actually "cool." In fact, now they've become iconic for people that have no taste or high school kids trying to fit in.

New balance is 20% the size of adidas , which is half the size of Nike. It isn’t swiftly catching up. It’s less than 10% the size of Nike, and if you combine adidas, LuLu, on, Hoka, Reebok, and newbalance together, Nike is still larger (and has better margins).

Nike must have spent a sh-t ton of time marketing their product on "The First 48"

I see Nike on every episode.
