@7ple+1rrXZWoQ. I am sure there are those that turn down special assignments. But there are also those that took what was supposed to be a short term assignment in your department that you blocked from taking a lateral move. Anyone who has been at Ford at least 10 years knows many that this happened to. It is common practice.

@7qlc, if I had a nickel for eve6 GSR7 who whines about not getting a chance to get promoted, I wouldn’t be working. When I point out the dozens of special opportunities that came up in the past year that they passed on, they just say “there was no point, no one will listen to the change we need.” Or whatever. The reality is, it’s hard work to earn a promotion and they just don’t want to do the fight. Some feisty GsR6 will come up and do it one day and then you wonder why they get promoted LL6 before them.

@7sbn+1rrXZWoQ. You left something out. You like to pigeonhole your workhorses, and limit their opportunity to grow. Someone has to turn the crank, and many aren't willing to do so. If you have someone that is, it is best to keep them. After all, the corporate flavor of the year, DEI, and FNF limit your flexibility on the few real growth assignments.

@7sbn - I’m a former LL5 from Ford, retired last year but also lurk here out of morbid curiosity. You are correct in everything you said. There are always a handful of GSRs who like to complain in the group who really won’t move on, but they hope that by stirring up some of the others, they will benefit. They figure if they can get a couple team mates to quit, they will get paid more to stay. But here is the truth, if we have a retention problem, we focus on how to keep the top talent and if you weren’t top talent before, you didn’t suddenly become that just because some dude left.

I am an LL5 and have lurked here for a while but I'll comment on this.

The truth is, most of us 5' and 4's know which GSRs aren't really going to 'leave'. Usually, because they can't. They dont have the skill set or they aren't talanted enough to get 'chosen' in an interview process.

Sometimes it's because they're comfortable with their routine or are afraid of change. And less and less often these days, it's because they're loyal to the company (this is usually much older employees).

These employees usually know that they'll never get hired into a company on the same level as Ford. So they stay. They may talk trash on sites like this, but they'll toe the line when it comes down to it - because they don't want to lose their job here.

Us mid-level leadership levels know this. And we use it to our advantage. We can pour work onto these people when we need a workhorse. Then we can ignore them or exclude them from projects for a while when we don't have enough to go around. Honestly, these employees like it when we underload them - it's like a mini vacation for them haha.

But at the end of the day, these are our 'achiever', at best, level employees. That keeps their salaries low and justifies us keeping them around as workhorses.

Which is ironic because LL4s-LL6s are some of the biggest pricks in the company.

I think most people here don't realize how little decision power LL4s-5s-6s have at Ford. Of course it varies by group, but on average we rarely push decisions down, mostly because we are so political that you eventually need someone with a higher pay grade to break the gridlock.

You're not ever going to get a package, man...

Try to make the most of your life while you can. Some day you'll look back - and you don't want to only see how miserable you were for so many years.

It really isn't 'Mr HR'...

I've seen this forum really go against HR, in general, so I don't expect much change...

But HR is genuinely just the grunt in the process. After the SRD, a lot of HR employees were canned after doing the dirty work.

They have no say in any of this.

In the conversation below, any mysterious bad reviews - after years of good reviews - would be entirely on the LL6/5/etc.

@6bmh, what you are describing is a form of constructive dismissal. This is actually why companies typically go the layoff route if possible as the severance is a hedge against potential lawsuit. The thing is, the win in court for constructive dismissal is usually little more than the severance you would have gotten and it can take a couple of years to actually go through the courts.

@6ywc+1rrXZWoQ kind of wonder if you get PIP'd out .. does the option to sue become even better? because now you dont have your severance to lose. e.g. faked-up bad performance reviews after many years of good reviews. courtroom: "so... you're saying that all of these employees suddenly 'got bad' for no particular reason, mister HR?" it will look very suspicious when done for lots of people. detroit area lawyers now doing the monty burns finger thing.... (watch the Simpsons). "Excellent, Smithers..." who in HR will be the whistleblower?

@5qrs+1rrXZWoQ

You're wrong...

If you don't like it here - leave.

Quit whining - quit complaining - and make a change.

That could include staying at Ford. But you'll have to play the game. Network with peers and leaders who can pull you upward if you're ever ready to take that step. Upskill. Learn new things to make yourself more valuable here.

Or leave. There are many jobs out there that will probably make you a lot happier than you are here. You sound absolutely miserable. I know it is scary to make a big change like that, but it is a lot better than staying miserable. And if you have a family or loved ones you spend time with - I guarantee they know you are miserable and they carry that weight too. I hope you aren't this jaded around them.

The days of massive layoffs and severance packages are behind us. Going forward Ford is going to utilize the PIP process to push people out - with cause. Then they won't need a severance package - as others have said, the severance package is really about the legal agreement that must be signed ensuring that you'll never sue or work for/with the company ever in the future.

It can be a tough choice, but it's the necessary one. Stay and get better - or leave and get better. But what you are doing - staying and doing nothing to improve your situation - will only keep you, and those around you, miserable.

Good luck. I hope it works out for you.

Sorry but this isn't how real life works.

With very few exceptions - the ones who are approaching pension milestones - don't stay at a miserable job because you hope to get a severance package.

It will only make you more jaded and miserable. Take care of yourself. Get another job now.

@4jif+1rrXZWoQ. You are a shrewd one. Hang in there, your manager is obviously clueless, but he will eventually give you the recognition you deserve and you will get a package. Whatever you do, don't get a better job without that max 9 months severance, even if it takes a few years.

I remember the weekend before August 22, 2022 , talking to a coworker. We were saying that that weekend might be the last weekend we were Ford employees.

That Monday he was let go but I wasn't. He landed another job quicker making more money.

Now here it's March 2024. He's fully remote, I'm going in 3 days a week. He's making more than ever, I'm getting 2-3% raises. We even compared bonuses. He's getting quarterly bonuses at over 25% of his salary. I'm getting 80% of 84% of a target that is well below 25% of salary.

My point? I'm hoping this time is my time.

The big one is coming. Brace for impact. They are targeting employees who also work side businesses i.e. new building contractors for homes in Royal Oak.
