Thread regarding Fidelity Investments layoffs

Silent Firing

Fidelity’s answer to Silent Quitting must be Silent Firing? I lost my job yesterday and had less than a 0 inkling it was coming… In past roles I would always hear some rumor swirling around…but this time it was like an as-----n in the night. Oh and stop believing the talking heads saying the economy is doing great! Its not.

Staying 3 more weeks is a lot and kind of unreasonable for Fidelity to expect that. Presumably they wants it as time to transition work to other people (learning lessons from past VBOs. Maybe use it as time to tell people and network internally?

In the 2008 RIF, we were told on a Tuesday or Thursday (I forget which) and had until that Friday. Many chose to pack up and leave same day, immediately after they were told.

At BAML, when my manager laid people off, he had to escort them to their desk and wait while they pack, and then walk them out the front door. This is pre-Covid. And he flew from Boston to NJ to tell people in person.

Why would a company tell you they are planning layoffs? Would you tell your company you were planning on convincing thousands to leave? Or even yourselves?

Workers customarily give two weeks. Fidelity gave us 3. I’m not upset about it. Things will be ok. It su-ks. It’s inconvenient. But we are not our jobs. Life will go on.

This happens at every company much more frequent at Fidelity, and we have all likely survived the layoffs of 2008 and 2017/2019. Eventually you get hit.

At any job, unless you’re self employed or in a family business, I hate to tell you… you are just a number and all of us are dispensable. Welcome to capitalism.

I’m sure it’s out of an abundance of respect for those affected not to disclose who was let go. They have until the end of the month to let people know on their own terms. It’s not up to the squad leads or even our business. If someone doesn’t want to tell you, that’s their business. I’m sorry if you feel unsafe, it’s part of having a job. Nothing is guaranteed.

As for the rumors, they were swirling since last year, sorry you didn’t catch wind. This was not a surprise, but it did su-k.

Silent alright. The managers nor squad leads have said who’s affected. Not fair our co-workers had to hear it directly from us or the rumor mill. It puts them in an awkward position not knowing what to say. Where’s HR when you need them?

Use the 3 weeks to find another job folks and don’t do any work. Work stopped when they told us Thursday. They don’t care about you nor the work you have done nor your tenure and dedication to the firm. It speaks volumes when they cut you and tell you, you have to stay 3 weeks. You aren’t important to them but they aren’t ready to cut the cord yet. We feel used one more time.

I’m sorry to read this. I do hope you received a severance. There is life after Fidelity just know that and the people that currently work for Fidelity please know you’re just a number. It doesn’t matter how hard you work, if the algorithm chooses you, you’re out. Don’t get too attached is all I recommend. Fidelity is a job not a career. They use and abuse you then toss you out.
