I fight for my employees as much as possible when I feel it justified, and looked the other way on RTO until it started affecting my performance. In many cases now it is out of our hands other than when trying to help out employees with temporary WFH accommodations. As a manager if I have employees not meeting the 3 day requirement I get notified, but after a fairly short period of time senior leadership starts to be notified. For me I don't care where you work just get the work done but I'm not going to put my job, merit, and bonus on the line so that you can keep working from home.

Managers have no say in the matter beyond enforcement. My leader said he doesn’t even monitor it and does care. But they also said that HR is monitoring so if they object then he has to do deal with it. I doubt most managers care given we worked remote for like two years.

No one is more dispensable than mid level managers and directors. They have little decision making authority, limited knowledge of actual work, and have no interest is managing nor developing talent. They are leaches who feed off of the top talents working for them yet they rarely provide any recognition nor genuine appreciation.

Leadership has the same failed view, that employees only have two choices. There's a much more corrosive third possibility, and it's actually the most likely outcome. I suppose it shouldn't be shocking that the executives fail to grasp reality, they continuously make poor decisions based on faulty assumptions. Oh well, it really doesn't matter anyway. HY doesn't even care to understand the domestic work force at this point, they're just going to get rid of us instead. A matter of time, and F them for it.

Why are most (middle) managers so spineless and emotionally immature?

I will be glad to leave, but not until they pay me for a year severance for all the bullsh-t they put me through

You think a manager “defending” employees from RTO is going to change something? All it would accomplish is getting the manager fired for non-compliance along with the employees.

OP, I refer you to the Serenity Prayer. As a frontline manager, I have zero power to influence a change to RTO or the location strategy. Thus, I will not expend any energy on it and I am at peace with that.

The focus on rent and RTO is misplaced. Capital expenditures are good and reduce the tax burden. This isn’t your linoleum floored kitchen where you’re trying to balance the family budget so you can buy more Mac n Cheese.

As far as “defending employees from RTO” and other atrocities, how much more are you going to beat this dead horse? Managers are also EMPLOYEES!!! Subject to the same requirements. The company dictates the rules and unless they are unlawful or immoral it is the responsibility of the employees to follow them. Nobody says we have to like it but constantly complaining that they switched from 3 ply to 1 ply won’t register on anyone’s scale. Get over it! There is always the option to find a position that is better to you elsewhere.

The FIRM word, just churns my stomach! I think we’re just called a bank.

Look, we have MAJOR layoffs coming, I’m running it out for 28 years for severance but others, please start looking!

I also got EEOC on my side as well.

So just protect yourself!

Can we please knock off the firm BS? We are a BANK. Senior management acts like we are some big tech company who does banking on the side. Worked remote for 3 years. Didnt cost the company a penny in rent. Never missed a deadline and was EXTREMELY productive.

To be clear I hate RTO but why would a manager defend/protect an employee from RTO noncompliance? Would you put your job on the line for another employee that’s isn’t following company policy? Would they do the same for you? No. It’s self preservation. everyone for themselves workplace anymore.

What a BS response how do you think we got into this mess? Because everyone does what the person ahead of them tells them to do. Where is real leadership? Where do you think employee morale comes from?

The reality is … it makes no difference. This is a strategic shift for the entirety of the firm. It’s get onboard or be left behind, period. Though, I’ll fully admit that I support the consolidation, and RTO. And morale is a separate and distinct conversation.
