Thread regarding IBM layoffs

CIO layoffs

I was RA'd, along with several others.

I'm thinking about applying for another job within IBM, but I think I forfeit my severance if I'm hired internally elsewhere.

That seems like a bad idea.

Why rejoin a company that will just lay you off again in the future? I'm sure IBM would love to not have to pay me a severance.

I can only tell you my personal experience, but getting laid off from IBM 15 years ago was the best day of my life. That company does not care about you, or anyone. Even if you were not laid off, you will be asked to go back to the office, no matter where you live. It's an awful place. I still have family and friends there and they hate it.

What severance are you getting, 3 months? Begging for another job is more of the same. In mosst cases they won't let you take this job anyways. Take the opportunity to get out, your life will become better. IBM letting you go is a positive.

A colleague of mine was to be RA’d, and then a new role was found for him. Nine months later he was put on a PIP. He appealed, but due to the ba----dry of the company (Australia) in their process and justifications, they made his life he-l.

He eventually resigned in order to preserve his sanity.

Eff IBM. The frontline pays the price for executive’s DOA strategies.

Good advice here if you have been RA’d

If you find an internal job within 90 days of separation, you may be requested to return the severance. (Severance is money to not sue IBM apparently)

If you find another job internally, it is considered a transfer. So, you would not receive severance since you would still be an employee.

Got RA’d today as well. Getting 30 more days of “work” and after that three months worth of severance. Too bad the market completely su-ks for finding a new job right now.

FYI there are some problems with your plan (in case you haven't already guessed). First of them is that RA employees are not easy to rehire under any circumstances. Not only must your service record be marked as "re-hireable" by your current manager, but whoever is thinking of rehiring you must get approval from several levels of their own management chain, along with the legal and HR departments. This pretty much eliminates the possibility of being rehired within the same division, and the same issues exist even if you apply for employment in another division.

With that said...if you were to get rehired after your exit date (as distant a possibility as that may be), then you'll keep your severance...you did leave the company, after all. On the other hand, if you get "rehired" before your exit date, then HR treats you as if you just switched departments. There was no separation, and no termination of employment, so you get no severance.

Do not stay, get out while you can, this is a blessing.
Leverage the IBM name if possible and go!

Agree. You'd just be "kicking the can down the road." Your fate would be the same - it's the same fate for all of us, eventually.
