No. I am an exempt employee but I do not manage people.

T also has non-management non-union employees so many posts are incorrect.

As folks have noted, titanic T uses this titling & classification to avoid paying OT & giving condign promotions.

“Yes. We don’t manage people. We manage finances, systems, processes, data, etc. but yes we’re managers.”

I’m a Senior Software Engineer, don’t insult me by calling me a ‘manager’

Workday does not classify L1+ Individual Contributors as "Manager". I'm an L2 IC and I don't care about position or title, it just means more pay.

Bargained versus non-bargains is accurate. L1 - L2's are 'at will employees' with management classification.

There are a lot of different 'flavors' IC's. Salaried (exempt) and hourly (non-exempt).
Examples:

  • A highly skilled CPA working in Capital Management (exempt) - L2 with no direct reports.
  • A 'yard' manager, L1 with bargained for direct reports.
  • An IT/Finance manager with 'lead' in title, no direct reports, but can assign, delegate and initiate work to peers. Often has pretty broad decision making authority and contributes to peers reviews - L2 exempt.
  • A role that handles individual customer escalations (like OOP) - L1 non-exempt.
  • Associate/Technical Director, has direct reports. If I remember correctly L2-1B (exempt)

AT&T Managers need to refer to themselves as “Leader of Self”. You own your destiny and must pursue your own career path. Bargained for, or union employees, aka level zero, are “Frontline Growth Engines” and will be directed by “Leaders of People”. I know it’s complicated, but we’ve only been doing this since 1983.

Hard to fathom how people don't understand this.

You are far better off using the terms "bargained for" and "non bargained for".

Bargained for workers are Union workers.

Non bargained for workers are in a title that does not fall under a Union contract. The blanket term sometimes used for all of these positions are "management". Many, probably the majority of these folks have no direct reports.

The manager listing is a vanity job title.

IC’s are non-union managers without direct reports.

Hourly ICs are union employees with no representation.

They feel big saying they are managers, but really the company just found a way to beat the union.

My understanding is that all non-bargained employees are considered "managers" to skirt around rules for "employees".
While we are called "managers " we don't actually manage anyone.

IC’s don’t usually have direct reports.
They may manage projects and assign tasks/issues but it isn’t usually in an official capacity from what I’ve seen.

T loves making talented IC’s lead projects unofficially without promotion or additional pay.

This place su-ks.

Yes. I'm a 1st level manager. No reports. Individual contributor role. C&E. Bottom of the barrel. Highly rated. Raises are terrible at this level and in this org.

Individual contributors can be management level, but may or may not manage people.

In my case, I am management, and given a manager level, but a job title that is not like a manager.
