Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

The last VSP...

The last VSP was a significant impact to Network/GNT. My director team lost 25% of the workforce for a core wireless application function. There was some backfill in the following year, but most work was absorbed by those who chose to stay. The "acceptance" rate was high and I did not encounter a single person who was rejected. Some got the +3 months +6 months release dates, but all who clicked "yes" were let go. After 30 years, many inventions and lifelong contributions to VZ (and prior companies) I was RIF'd in 2022. If you are older, male, caucasian and/or at odds with your chain of command, you'll be RIF'd before you decide to quit. VZ is swimming in debt, needs to reduce costs and align with woke government /investor requirements to survive. All product /technology decisions point to the "d-mb pipe" model which isn't sustainable after everyone subscribes to a mobile phone and home broadband. There is no upside to this business model. 5G doesn't perform without significantly more investment. As painful as it is to accept, it doesn't matter if you have "the nuclear codes" or some other perceived critical function in the business, you can be replaced, eliminated, or RIF'd. All of the network/IT/Care functions can be performed from India at 1/10th of the cost. Mobile operators/Telcos in USA and Canada are going through the same thing. In LATAM, telcos are broke and can barely pay their bills.

Yes the woke culture has destroyed Verizon and is destroying America. It’s a cancer that needs to be addressed.

Being a caucasian male more than likely has no impact on you being Riffed.

Maybe you didn't get the diversity memo. VZ is proud of being extremely diverse. It wasn't that long ago that they announced all 14 new director positions were filled by women or persons of color. I'll translate that for you: no white males.

Yes, in some case double the rate, but HCL doesn't just keep people on the payroll waiting for the next contract. They get rid of them. VZ kept people on payroll without knowing what they were doing. HCL uses very involved analytics on all projects to know if they are on track, if they are still revenue-positive, and if they run past the agreed time frame they require the customer to pay more to continue. VZ had projects that were for a 12 month time frame for implementation that often due to customer dragging feet went WELL beyond the initial project timelines and VZ just kept paying for PMs. HCL does not do that; they only sign and only continue projects that are revenue positive...something for whatever reason VZ never bothered with. Now that VZ has to pay someone else, and that someone else cares about bottom line, all of the VZ PMs who were working a 3 year old project that was supposed to complete in 12 months and now there's not revenue to pay for that PM, HCL drops the project and drops the headcount....like a REAL business.

I'm in one of the groups that is not eligible. What I'm concerned about is what life after VSP will look like. It was a $ hit show for some time after the last one (until they hired many back as contractors at double the rate).

Sadly, I believe you and find it hilarious. Systems are straight garbage. I have also noticed that they su-k even more since vsp was announced. I’m guessing the peeps that were keeping together with duct tape stopped giving a sh-t.

The work we did in house saved so much money, now it’s done by contractors for 25x more the cost - I’ve seen the invoices. But no one cares because “that’s a different budget”. At the end of the year it’s all EPS. The corporate structure and grading is ruining the system, we could do so much better.
It’s genuinely sad to me because I always liked Verizon and as part of the Team I wanted us all to be the best, and win. But instead we are stepping over dollars to pick up dimes and we are losing for it.

Assuming you started with vz straight out of college you are probably in your 50s more than likely capped at max salary. While your other points are valid this woke bullsh-t is seriously delusional. Being a caucasian male more than likely has no impact on you being Riffed.

You are simply a casualty of the bean counters. Why keep the older person who makes max or almost max salary? Along with a high possibility of health care benefits being high keeping you costs more than letting some college grad or off shore person do it for cheaper.

The woke part only matters for optics, it’s so that they can continue BAU without upsetting the general public and investors too much.

The only valid accusation would be agism but let’s be honest people only care about that when they get old themselves.

While posts are usually insightful you end up invalidating your whole point by bringing up culture war bs
