Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Got my pre-notification. My 28 year career ends in July.

I’m going to need a little time to digest. Gave so much of my life and health to making this company profitable. Looking back, a lot of fond memories, golf outings, award ceremonies and happy hours. My VP said, “You’re safe, you’ll be fine…” and then left for another market. I should have retired before the medical plan was pulled and become a caddy and work for tips. Instead I stayed and kept the status quo going thru the pandemic. I even have a photo with Stankey. No one is safe.

If a Vice President for AT&T is talking, they are lying.

We have descended into a callous leadership structure trying to rectify the errors of the past by any means possible including and primarily deceit.

att has made it clear years ago they don't care about having employees long term. I took my own destiny in my own hands after 18 years and could not have been happier and left at the perfect time. I saw how att treated loyal employees and decided the time was perfect and I was right.

Truly sorry to hear this. Look at the bright side you get to begin a new chapter. Focus your time on your family, Friends and Kids if you have any. Also maybe this is time to find a new purpose to give back to society. Spend time teaching young people your wisdom and craft. Trust me you do that you will be surprised how fufilled you will be. Spend time adding to other people lives!

If you started in your mid-20’s, you’d be around 53 or so. How many 53 year old do you know are financially able and ready to retire.

Actually I'm craft and I'm in that boat with $1.7 million in retirement assets. I kept expenses below my take home pay and put away 16% every paycheck from the beginning and stayed out of debt.

It's always coworkers who live the YOLO life complaining they don't make enough money.

I should have retired before the medical plan was pulled

Don't fret over this. They scr@wed people with this also. Many who were "promised" the post medicare subsidy quickly discovered how easily the company can scr@w them over even after leaving (and putting in many many years). They got people to leave and then changed the subsidy to an advantage plan with a horrible allowed provider list. If you want an advantage plan like they offered, you can get one just as good on your own for free. The provider list is even worse than the HMO lists offered in employee plans.

Maybe you lost out on the subsidy to medicare if you really want to pay into the AT&T medical plan until medicare, but I wouldn't count on that staying around long either. They've always said they can pull that also and am sure they will. If they don't care about current employees, why do you think they care about retirees?

“Mentally prepare for 6-12 months of hard work. Like so many others have said, myself included, you’ll end up in a much better place professionally and personall”

The job market was better 2-3 years ago but you decided to stay and bury your head in the sand. This may be upsetting but T was incredibly generous with the advance notice and warning signs this was coming.

“You got 28 years in. I don’t want to hear any of your whining. It was time to go a long time ago.”

This isn’t the NBA, dude. Careers in most industries are a different ball game.

If you have been in the same career for 28 years, and started said career in your early 20’s or younger, maybe straight out the gate at 18- can you collect your pension or social security? No? Shut up.

I'm sorry this happened to you. I hope you find the peace and emotional healing that you deserve. I can only imagine how hard it is to lose something that has been part of your life for so long.

Now, time to find out who you want to be, without AT&T. Don't worry, there are a lot of us former bell heads everywhere you go. Congrats on the 28 years, most of us couldn't pull that off!

To the person saying that after 28 years it was time to go a long time ago, just think about it. If you started in your mid-20’s, you’d be around 53 or so. How many 53 year old do you know are financially able and ready to retire. Wage progression at T is always in the 3-5% range, barring promotions, etc… You get married, have a kid or two, house, cars, education expenses… Unless you were living well under your means, your 50’s and 60’s would be the greatest earning years of your life. That’s all shot to he!! in this current economic climate. So when people express fear of losing out on this, try to understand where they’re coming from. It’s safe to the largest majority of employees at T aren’t trust fund babies who can retire at the drop of a hat. Is there opportunity out there, absolutely. Mentally prepare for 6-12 months of hard work. Like so many others have said, myself included, you’ll end up in a much better place professionally and personally.

You sound like you're up there in the management ladder so I'm guessing at $200K+ a year you have no debt and quite the retirement fund especially with a 28 year career with the company. I'm sure you'll be fine.

There is a good life after T. I left before the medical was pulled and took the lump sum, rates were great. Took a few months off , found a job with a great culture, better medical benefits and summers off. You’ll look back with no regret other than leaving a bit earlier. Good luck.

If AT&T management is talking they are lying. If AT&T management is not talking they are preparing to begin lying again. AT&T management ALWAYS lies. Working for AT&T is like being in a prison - trust no one, everyone is for sale and there’s a Shank waiting for everyone! Get out today.
