Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Do you think after AT&T has shed enough people they may revisit hybrid work?+

I ask because I may have an opportunity to go back to work there. I was laid off in the September round. I'm also curious if AT&T has been contributing to a pension for me, will I be considered strictly a new hire from that perspective or will they contribute once more if they extended an offer and I accept? Can anyone share how many employees there are at the moment roughly? I remember somebody tracking it at one point. I'm not at all keen on working in an office after working remotely for 12 years. But I might do it. 😖 Thanks!

Before all this f--king stuuupidttyy. We were able to dock at any att building or warehouse near us, so it wasnt really a problem to be required to be in an office say once a week. Ive worked here long and ive always been once or 2x a week thing to wherever closes to you... but they changed the game, so we have to adapt unless you found a job or have millions somewhere, we arent going anywhere

You are either terribly desperate, don't have much of a resume to speak of or you need to have your head examined? Going back to work for T is a huge mistake, but hey, if you want to learn the hard way, then go for it!

Not unless you want to relocate to India or Mexico. That's where they are hiring.

Always more US jobs to eliminate when they can offshore or ship them south.

“you had at&t on your resume and nobody else would hire you? It happens !”

You could always go work at TMUS - you know a company with a stock that actually goes up, and doesn’t have an entire leadership team of paint sniffing, golf playing, co----e hooligans.

Are you a glutton for punishment?

The pendulum always swings back and forth. But for the next couple of years your job is in Dallas or Atlanta.

No, and frankly they shouldn't. Especially for sales teams.

I mean, the reality is that “most” orgs have hybrid work schedules in place, with the minimum of 3 days in the office. Some are requiring full time in office though.

Wondering what you would consider coming back? Have you not found ANY other opportunities since September?

It's not the amount of people that matters. Is the real estate footprint that does. Until we sell of more building T will want as many as possible in the office.

“if they fire enough people can i work from home….wow”

For developers and individual contributors it makes sense.
They’re only doing this to cut costs, everyone knows it’s a charade and no one actually believes making everyone sit in the same building will make any difference.

Logic kinda dictates:
If they reach their goals for cutting, they will go back to more lax in-office requirements that were more productive since they are only implementing these requirements to cut staff without layoffs.

I suspect this will eventually happen once they realize not everyone is actually going to fit into these hubs, they can off-load non-productive real-estate, and when commercial leases expire and they have to finally face the financial burden of failing commercial real-estate that’s at most 40%-50% occupied.

This likely won’t happen for a few years though, and will involve upper management basically getting bored with RTO, slowly ignoring the reports, supervisors slowly not checking the tools, and eventually over time - things will just go back to how they were once the next shiny thing comes a long for the C-suite to chase.
Then they will either ignore it and never admit forced relocations and RTO was a mistake, or they will spin it like it was their idea all along and they just needed everyone in the office to assist with the ‘transition’ period of the company and now that our commercial real-estate footprint is ‘better’ we can all WFH again while maybe just visiting some campus or office a couple times a month (which for most normal IC’s means never)

I think the company that buys your org's business from the private equity corporate looters that buy AT&T to break up and sell probably will focus more on remote work. Probably only at first, until they can train people in developing countries to do the jobs.

They will keep shedding. Happened last week on my team and there are no indications they are done. If you are in Dallas and understand you could be gone any day then maybe it’s worth a shot but not otherwise.

Even when T knows they’re wrong, which they absolutely are, they will never admit it and won’t change things back.

No.
They’re still pushing RTO hard.
You’ll be required to relocate to a hub.
Teams are moving to location based - as such your team will likely be where you’re based and switching teams will become more difficult.
3-5 days in office is required, you can just badge in and leave, but you still need to make time 3 days a week to commute and badge.
Some orgs/teams care more than others, lots of supervisors don’t care and don’t care if you coffee badge but need the reports to look like you’re in office. Your milage may vary.
HR, Marketing, and ‘non-technical’ orgs tend to be pushing RTO harder than technical ones (go figure). I only have close relationships with technical orgs, they mostly don’t care but need to keep up appearances to make the paper-pushers happy (HR, upper management, etc).

I’m only still here due to the simple fact that I already have a position and the job market is bad. If the market was in a better state I’d certainly leave. I would NOT come back.

If you have to relocate, don’t. Find a job from a company that will pay you to relocate. Relocating for work on your own dime is insane.

TLDR: No, stay away - run as fast as you can.
Stankey still su-ks, they’re still pushing RTO/forced relocation hard. You aren’t getting remote, you aren’t getting a relocation package, they’re tracking badge swipes, run.
I don’t see anything changing til Stankey is gone, I’d wait til then.

Yes, yes, at&t will make you wealthy far beyond your expectations. Your service will bridge at three years, you can also expect at&t to contribute to your pension, provided you are entitled to one. This has got to be the best news for you and your family. No doubt you can telecommute, but make sure to get it in writing. Good luck you lucky dog! It goes to show the company can indeed have buyers remorse when cutting high level employees.
