Remote Impact: Business vs. Technology

We have thousands of Lead Product Owners, Senior Business Analysts, Business Product Managers, and Business Heads who have been working remotely for years. The question arises: With this latest location strategy, have they also received layoff or relocation notifications, or is it primarily affecting those in technology roles?

If they have connections to powerful executives and Sr. managers, they can remain remote without any issues. If they don't have any connections, they will be cut. Some of them directly told me that their Sr. managers are protecting them.

Keep in mind some of those 23,000 remote employees have accommodations to work remote. Remote employees can live in a job city also.

If your job was impacted by location strategy, I would seek legal counsel. There are Wells employees still based in those locations

It is affecting remote in the business as well. Happened to some in COO yesterday and the reason was explicitly shared as location strategy starting with remote.

The Site Strategy and attendant layoffs are being phased in based on LoB internal plans; this will run through EoY '25 supposedly. You'll see that 23K number decrease over the next 18 months.

Folks, log into teamworks... Go to people finder, advanced search. In the drop down, select phsysical location 1 and in the search box type REMOTE, then search.

Over 23,000 remote people

if you scroll down you can see how many remote people by state, LOB, job title.

If you want stats, go on to tm lookup and search. Almost 23k remote employees right now. Well, probably less because some are still on their notice period, but it's definitely "thousands". There's also a good number of employees that are still non impacted by RTO. Their official work location is an office, but they aren't expected to go there. Sure, corporate will get to them at some point, but it hasn't happened yet and others have been driving around their city for no reason for 2+ years now.

I think this depends on your LOB, but it appears through reorganizing technology, there are more product team members than needed. They're just setting up the pins to knock 'em down. I have also seen more offshore product owners.

They have reduced the number of scrum masters too. The remaining have much higher work loads and are responsible for more scrum teams now. They have off-shored this role too, supporting the offshore tech teams.

It's all a steady move toward increasing offshore resources while increasing work loads for individuals.

“Thousands… who have been working remotely for years” - need to see the stats.

No, it won't. In fact, if the business case for off shoring focuses on how much money it will save, people going to a hub in the US bolsters the case. That's the most expensive way to employ people. But don't worry guys, it's all about cOlLaBoRatIon, and things.

Getting rid of remote employees is just a single phase in the grand plan to get rid of almost all domestic workers. Going to an office may change the timeline, it won't change the end result.

I forgot to add this can take up until Q1 2026 before those positions have a definitive alignment

Have they already received notice, that I cannot answer because I’m not one nor do I know any.

You left out of your OP “WILL they receive notice?” Yes, absolutely. This reduction in remote work is not a business unit goal. It is Shart down. YES, ALL remote employees will be impacted. The only variable is what that impact looks like and the timing of it.

Most will be displaced, few will be offered the opportunity to relocate, even fewer will receive a long term exemption to remain remote but those roles will be stagnated. No vertical movement or appreciable salary increase. To move laterally will require you to relocate to an approved market first. And if you leave that slot would be backfilled by an office worker.
