Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

Merit means nothing anymore

Once somebody realizes what it is that secures a promotion at Wells Fargo, they either start putting much more effort into office politics than doing their job or they leave. This has cost us so many good employees over the years and it will continue to take its toll. Remember when merit actually meant something?

At Wells Fargo, "Merit" means nothing, "Favoritism" means something.

This perfectly describes the toxic COO environment. I have no doubt in mind that COO management is the worst at Wells Fargo.

It's totally skewed with favorites and yes men. I wouldn't recommend working in Technology - under any circumstance. Managers retaliate all the time. Don't give them the time of day and find a better paying role elsewhere.

managers in technology gave their favorites larger piece of the pie when it came to merit and bonus (if eligible) It didn’t matter how well you performed.
Pure favoritism.
Remember when Bei came on board and changed titles that eliminated bonus for some roles?

It never did. We were promised it would when JPM retreads took over exec management but the WF entrenched bureaucracy prevailed.

One of the key metrics is blind loyalty. You have to do whatever your manager tells you to do. No questions allowed. If you ever question their decisions or instructions, they will get mad because their vulnerable ego cannot handle it. Always follow their commands "blindly" if you want to get promoted. Remember, they are all narcissists and psychopaths.

You should know by now, the only way to get a promotion is through political connections (aka old boys club). You have to keep brown-nosing your superiors and lick their shoes everyday. If they like you, maybe you will get a good performance review. If they don't like you, you will always get a bad performance review no matter what. It's been always that way.

Merit is racist...hence DEI, duh!

I couldn't care less about promotions, but I do feel bad for people in that rat race. Especially these days where the execs would rather just hire for advanced positions in India than the US.

I agree on this. If you are responsible and take charge of your work, you get more work. If you are lazy and difficult to work with - slow or poor results, you get less work. I've worked with more than a few people like this in tech. My boss was afraid of them and the potential impact of giving a poor review or the hassle of an improvement plan. He was a weak leader and hurt everyone by letting the slackers ride on our coat tails. Also we couldn't count on them to cover properly when we were on vacation. Now the layoffs are coming and merit doesn't matter. We are not in a core location and we'll both be laid off - both being punished equally. Is this right?
