Why are the 99, 00, and 01 hires considered to be the downfall of Verizon according to some people?

Hired in 04 and volunteered for the vsp in 2019. Now I have been at T-mo for almost 5 years and my only regret was not leaving earlier. It feels like the the company used to before the vz vodaphone split. As a reference I am in the engineering department for large enterprise and and strategic customers.

Union dinosaur mumbled something about copper. That ancient $hit that is being dismantled. What a joke! You need a sidekick in the nursing home old timer.

For all the big mouth mo--ns. You still need a sidekick if you work on copper. And if you shoot trouble with a butt set your an id--t. Guess what your area might be all fiber. But some areas still have a lot of copper.

Company hasn’t given you a sidekick because your one of the union bloat that can’t handle it.

There’s a bulge in the curve of 99-00-01 hires in management, too. From what I understand, during those years, we were making engineering and technical leadership hires from unrelated fields like retail, hospitality, and real estate.

I could understand hiring a mechanical engineer who used AutoCAD to run BSTCAD as an outside plant engineer.

But the company seems to be teetering on this line of “we want qualified personnel with experience” vs. “your prior experience doesn’t matter here, we’ll teach you the Verizon Way and you’ll have to rise through the ranks”.

Doublespeak. Pick one.

Because they were laid off and it went to the courts
They weee made whole and reinstated with backpay around 2003
The events of 9/11 were used as a justification for a layoff

Since Lowell had been mentioned, he was tired of being Denny's backup, so he had to prove he deserved the CEO spot once anointed. If you take a historical look, the issues started when Lowell decided to purchase VOD's interest in VZW for $130B. The purchase needed to occur, since money to pay dividends had to be borrowed. If cash from VZW were tapped, then VOD would receive a proportionate distribution as well and no one wanted this to occur.

The price paid to VOD was at least $40B too much. Based on the purchase price for the 45% partnership share from VOD, VZW would have had a $290B total value. Think about it this way. For $290B, you could have acquired AT&T Wireless, Sprint PCS, Wireless Operators providing service throughout Mexico and Canada with cash remaining.

Any time that an executive is involved with am acquisition, it becomes a disaster. It is no longer about price, it is only about their ego and Lowell had a huge ego. This overpayment is the beginning of the ever increasing debt.

Another executive from Ireland was under investigation for price fixing, where's your credo now, was involved with the Tracfone acquisition paying ~$286 per prepaid subscriber that everyone knows has no contract or early termination penalty. At the same time VZ is pay $286 per prepaid subscriber, VZ launches their own prepaid service at $25 per month.

Since the Tracfone acquisition 2M subscribers have churned.

Another debacle, but Ronan was probably negotiating with his ego and more concerned about serving jail time.

The company made some deal with the government and lowered the standards to hire people. That’s what it was and it’s unfortunate. That’s why the union pushed for a no layoff clause. Even the union knew the hiring was subpar and the company would get rid of them as soon as they could.

1jmy 💥 bo-m.... McAdams was an absolute cancer who was all about divide and conquer. I remember being laughed at by 20 year olds working in a cell store that I had to picket outside of during the McAdams era strike... oh, and now that store no longer exists and those employees long gone. Hans is just an average guy who never should have been given the job, but it was McAdams who was downright evil.

Hello, to be clear this references three (3) calendar years, 1999, 2000, and 2001, and their respective union hires contrasting their individual(s) work ethics? Correct?

I’ve never heard anyone say that. I have heard people say it was Lowell and Marni.

I can tell you from the non union side that the people of that era tend to be an older crowd which age isn’t a problem. But my coworkers tend to look at things and say “not my job” . Or I will take time to assist people with their jobs that technically isn’t my responsibility because I think it’s a team effort and helping them helps me in the end. But these people will not make the same effort, it’s generational I believe.

Downfall is a strange word. I think the after 2000 hires are just not under the no layoff contract wording of previous contracts. Once the mostly elder union bloat leaves, these guys can be laid off whenever the company desires. No pension. I think.
