I can picture many Indian scrum masters with a mustache giving Indian developers a hard time. 🤣

"Why so many scrum master?" This is a broken English. It should be "scrum masters" in plural. Clearly, OP is an Indian whose first language is not English. So OP is posting this question based on the current environment in India. It makes perfect sense because many U.S. scrum masters' jobs are being outsourced to India, replaced by incompetent Indian scrum masters who do not know what they are doing. I can imagine there are thousands of them in India now and annoying Indian developers every day! LOL.

The U.S. is laying off a lot of Scrum Masters right now. The Indian Scrum Masters replaced many of the U.S. counterparts because they are located in the same time zone as Indian Developers. Most of the Indian Scrum Masters don't do anything except holding daily meetings. One thing you should be aware is that Wells Fargo is not really using the real Agile methodology (name only), and the bank doesn't seem to care. They also seem to keep changing the strategic direction every 9 months or so, and the bank doesn't seem to care as long as they improve "financial efficiency" (downsizing and offshoring). Quality improvement is the very last thing they have in mind.

That’s why nothing gets done. Only talking is there. SM loves process, paperwork and talking. No coding no problem! Let’s have meetings!

Wellsfargo is the Disneyland for sc-mmasters. They paid well, they are protected well, they are treated well.

Meanwhile Rest of world has removed them long time ago.

Scrum masters thought they were they next big thing... until they weren't.

Just like corporate buzzwords, they're now laughed at and will end up in dust bin of history.

So many?!? They have already cut back and overloaded the remaining ones with the work of their fallen comrades.

A CSM from digital explained to me that the company wants to do away with scrum masters altogether and make the PO take on the duties.

Fear not. That herd is being culled with extreme prejudice.

@dvr+1sp4mqXq Your data may be factually correct but it is inaccurate in practice. There are few dedicated Scrum Masters Stateside but many “designated” Scrum Masters. So responsibility with no authority or remuneration.

It must have been a mistake -- just as going "agile" was at this bank. Most of the trained scrum masters have been laid off. If you go to https://www.wellsfargojobs.com/en/jobs/ there are no scrum master jobs in US or India as of 5/6. On linkedIn Scrum master/Wells Fargo yields one job (posted in 4 core locations). Description doesn't mention Scrum Master.

You sound like you are from or in India. I hear everybody is a scrum master or product owner over there. But do they DO anything?

Because it's an easy cert that anyone can get with a weekend of training.

Because we're not very Agile. And more Scrum Masters means more people can micromanage us into being Agile. I hope their efforts are failing.

Some people though are really embracing Agile because then every time someone calls and asks a question or requests a form be submitted or a report ran, that person can add it as a story, backlog it, and add it/remove it from the current sprint a couple of times all in the name of looking busy and important.

I recall not so fondly
