I had a 7 year old laptop by the time WF laid me off. I had been using my own computer for VDI and it was a dramatically better experience than VDI through my ancient WF laptop.
I'm glad I got laid off for many reasons but at the time I was laid off, I was told that the company was never going to buy computers for employees again. If you wanted to WFH, you needed to buy your own PC for VDI. If you didn't want to, you had to come into the office and use a Chromebook with VDI.
Is that still the case now? That they are banning BYOD as yet another way to pump up their doomed real estate holdings and forcing everyone into the office to use the approved WF devices that can't leave the building?
The ability to access VDI using your personal computer is no longer available because of the risk it posed. There is no way for the company to detect if you have key loggers, viruses, etc on your personal computer….which could easily track your passwords and other things you are doing using VDI. Its too many security gaps and risk to continue using it.
I have a dual display personal computer at the house office area. Using VDI on it saved a lot of desk real estate. Not having to have the extra laptop not having to have dual keyboard and mice. It was awesome.
I agree completely, which is why I'd use newly acquired cheap dedicated devices to access VDI. Discovery? Ok, here's my $80 tablet that's never connected to any other site and has no personal info on it.
Probably because they laid off the US based people that used to support that.
From an employee standpoint, I'd be concerned that my personal BYOD laptop would be seized as part of discovery in the event of a lawsuit.
I'd bet it was more of a headache to deal with VDI on non-company hardware than to use laptops. And the funny thing is the policy was always that you could NOT do company business on personal hardware (yes, I get that VDI is not technically on your computer).
I mean come on folks, anybody that's been around for a while knows that we have one cluster f*k after another. The number of clueless, barely do anything people are all over the place -- even at pretty sr. tech levels. I'm amazed how many lead and principle level tech people are just utter dipshts.

... ar you nuts? Why would you ever WANT to use your own computer for work? If you're an independent contractor or run your own business, sure. But when you're an employee for a company? I'm genuinely shocked anyone would be upset by this.
I refuse to ever use my own hardware for their benefit again. Doesn’t matter if it’s in a container app on the phone or vdi, the regulators and government will still seize your personal property if you use it for work if your team ever gets pulled into a scandal. Fool me once, got my phone back years later and it was obsolete, I had long since had to replace out of my own pocket.
Maybe some whined about it, but i 1000% wanted to use my own hardware. Sick and tired of cr-ppy old tech failing and then having to deal with numerous incompetent support people to fix simple things. I can manage my own PC just fine. Opening a properties window is something I can handle. Everything being locked down to cater to the lowest common denominator is seriously annoying for anyone with an IQ above room temp.
On the bright side, WF just signed a contract with Lenovo so no more cr-ppy del'sl or hp's. Come on folks, seriously? The amount of whining that went on in this board when there was gossip that all WF computers were going away and TM's had to use their own, was ridiculous. But of course, need to whine that TM's can't use on home computers now.
Vdi on corporate laptops su-ks. They lose a half hour a week of my productivity on it. I’m not letting them touch my personal stuff.
I've been using for nearly two years. Curious what changed... In general, dings the credibility of technology.

Did some folks lose their laptops due to VDI? Everyone I know on VDI still has their corporate laptop.
