They never stood a chance with the CPUC. Stankey demanded EA/Regulatory Affairs team make a run at COLR relief (again, this was tried ~7 years ago as well).

I had phone service, those with VoIP, cell were out of luck until they restored power a few days later.

I've had plenty of power outages from this last winter's storms. The UPS kept my AT&T Gateway running providing me with VoIP, Internet, and AT&T Wi-Fi.

ATT needs to be removed as the COLR. In today’s world even the homeless has a cell phone.

Spoken like a true city slicker who's not affect by the whole COLR thing.

"when we had power outages from a snow and ice storm, I was the most popular person in my neighborhood."

No worries with mobile. VOIP and IP based services su-ked, but most cell providers had service restored pretty quickly. Many with home generators were fine with IP services. Xfinity and Frontier powered the local loop rather quickly.

"For younger people, if you know someone who has a real TDM landline, ask to use it. You’d be amazed at how much better the voice quality when talking to someone, it’s like they are there with you. It’s more expensive to maintain but you can’t beat the quality."

That's true... Kind of like HDTV on an antenna. Uncompressed...

However, how many old schoolers will happily communicate on a marginal Ham radio signal but complain about the voice quality on a digital cell signal?

Signed, another old guy who isn't stuck in the past.

Retired from Bell and I still have pots, a couple of years ago when we had power outages from a snow and ice storm, I was the most popular person in my neighborhood. I had phone service, those with VoIP, cell were out of luck until they restored power a few days later. Traditional landlines have batteries and generators for backup at the CO and RT’s. I have another friend who needs the reliability for his pacemaker, they make adjustments over the phone. Until they come up with a better solution I’m keeping my landline for emergencies, I use a cell phone but you can’t beat the clarity and reliability of an old landline.

For younger people, if you know someone who has a real TDM landline, ask to use it. You’d be amazed at how much better the voice quality when talking to someone, it’s like they are there with you. It’s more expensive to maintain but you can’t beat the quality.

ATT needs to be removed as the COLR. In today’s world even the homeless has a cell phone. It’s not feasible to hold any carrier as the COLR. Copper facilities need to be retired. Get with the times CPUC!!!

The problem is if they were freed from this requirement they would likely abuse the privilege. They can provide a wireless comparable service in lieu of pots so it’s not so bad for AT&T. They want off the switch and traditional OE without spending on a wireless hybrid solution. The union workforce required to maintain the copper network is at issue as well so many jobs would be lost.
