Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Chewnings solution - "Shut up"

On the Last townhall Ward had all he did was tell his folks don't complain to the stank if he asks you how it's going. Also if don't like RTO, too bad, we aren't talking about it anymore

“ Most of the skilled people who work here, work here because of the same reason I do, they live in HCOL areas where other companies aren’t hiring - and when AT&T makes everyone relocate to HCOL areas with competition what do you think those candidates will do?

Yeah, they will just go work somewhere else, like I am.
I’m willing to relocate, but not for T.
I’ve gotten offers from Microsoft, MasterCard, a few other companies, with relocation packages.
I’ll move, but NOT for a trash-tier company like T.”

Edit to this, I meant LCOL areas.
T used to hire from LCOL areas because they had offices spread out all over the US prior to their stupid hub strategy.

“Very few of the skilled personnel that are needed at T currently work here. Retirement eligible employees with skills not updated since the 80s are crippling T.”

And why do you think they don’t work here?
Do you think a highly skilled software engineer, ai specialist, or data analyst, graduates from university and goes: “I know what I want to do, go work at AT&T!”
No that doesn’t happen.

“Mgmt benefits are for the most part a result of negotiated Union benefits. Might be wrong but haven’t heard of RTO being a part of a CWA contract. Pretty sure that the Covid pandemic, which caused WFH for the most part, was not a planned negotiated occurrence that was earned. Will say that RTO is definitely being used as a vehicle to get rid of people, which su-ks.”

Tell this to all the tech companies who have 0 unions and still allow remote and hybrid with less over-sight and nonsense.

The market and in-demand employees with skills dictate what benefits you get. If enough skilled people that T needs push back, you’ll get benefits back as they will have to offer them to stay competitive.

“I mean. The conversation is tiresome at this point. Do people really have trouble understanding the concept of three and how to count to it. Maybe we should bring in a four year old to train people on it.”

There is nothing wrong with strong willed people who question authority and push back against pointless rules and regulations - especially when those rules and regulations and removing a benefit to an employee that they have or earned.

But yes, I suspect many people will have to leave, get fired, or laid off in the end - and this will be to the detriment of T and people like you who tow the line and will stay as your work load will increase and you will likely lose your highest performers and more senior technical folks who go elsewhere as multiple studies on strict RTO mandates have shown.

Enjoy your future over-worked existence at T, my friend.

“T hasn’t done enough to make you leave? Not sure there is nothing good they have done, surprised you have not left.”

I didn’t want to move.
I live in a LCOL area and most likely I will need to relocate to take a job elsewhere with RTO in full swing, and the job market is sub-par.

I am sending out resumes now though as I have accepted that I’ll most likely have to relocate for any position going forward.

I’ve gotten some responses, and offers of relocation packages - so I will likely take one of those and exit the company soon.

I am not too concerned about my skills or the job market (Software Engineer, not sure how the market is elsewhere). I’ve kept my skills up to date, and build full stack solutions with many different technology stacks.
I’m not worried - for myself at least. They want to di-k me around, I’ll just leave.

and makes cool products.??

When has AT&T ever made cool products? Are you talking about the old days when a child got a Santa Clause telephone for their additional line? Perhaps a Santa Clause Fitbit these days. We are like our major competitors in trying to gain more of the d-mb pipe business and subsequently wireless attachments. After Uverse, DTV, etc I am pretty satisfied with gaining market share with the d-mb pipe.

"RTO is really interfering with my golf game and my Costco runs."

To the Poster who said this, actually no, it does not.. I still get my Costco runs in while I am in the office... it is called "My lunch hour" and I now take them every day, every minute of them I use and get out of the office... In the past, I skipped my lunch, ate at my desk and gave the company another hour of work... I did the same from home, plus started an hour earlier and shut the lid on my laptop after the end of my day by an additional 30 min to an hour... so who really loses? sounds like the company to me... Lovin my lunch hours now and less time donating to the company!

That’s right, just don’t say anything BAD and don’t mention anything negative about RTO because out of sight means out of mind (nothing to see here folks).

“I think working at this company still is so yesterday.”

Exactly, if I’m going to get fu---d I’d at least like it to be by a company I actually believe in whose stock goes up and makes cool products.

T blows - everyone here is uninspired and only working for the check. This place su-ks, I hate it here.

Yes, the market is tough..but it’ll get better these things are cyclical.
I hope everyone has been putting away cash for when the hammer does come down on you at T - I have been…have ~$400k saved up $50k of that in an emergency fund I can ride out when they finally fire me.

I’m going my job, but idc about these rto mandates, I coffee badge and am sending out resumes.

This company is a dinosaur, I’m not inspired by the work, mission, or management, and have lost all motivation - so with that realization I’m probably not the kind of employee they want going into the future anyway, so I’m looking for something more tech oriented.

I hope everything works out for everyone in the end.

Good for you in having a position like that and kudos for keeping your skills relevant. Know a couple of folks who got a 3 round interview. They were supposedly competing with 3 other candidates. They were told on the last interview that 2 of the other candidates were internal hires. I assume that one of those got the position if there was indeed a real position available.

“From what I have read in the business news applying and getting jobs are not the same thing these days. Job postings are getting very specific as far as skill levels wanted. Know a few folks who have finally gotten actual interviews and only one got hired after putting in a crazy amount of applications. Seems some HR departments are only doing this to meet a indice for applications processed.”
