Thread regarding Verizon Communications Inc. layoffs

Offshoring reality check...

Offshoring has become more than call centers and IT. VZ has been rapidly moving "knowledge" workers to places like Ireland and India. Those people are still Verizon management employees.

Ignore your tenure and experience, honestly ask yourself, could you do your job anywhere in the world. Unless you meet with customers, physically maintain the network, or are subject to regulatory restrictions, why couldn't it be done somewhere else. There is a major knowledge transfer happening and the company is willing to bear the short term issues of knowledge loss to rebuild and "figure it out".

all of the reasons you think you are safe has been debated and well though out.

Is your question why couldn't it? Or why shouldn't it?

Why shouldn't is obvious localization problems, the fact that third party agents don't actually care if Verizon succeeds, they're under greater pressure to succeed and there's no accountability, so they can just pile on whatever and nothing is said because they're "technically not verizon".

As far as why couldn't they? They can and will. As much as they can gut everything. Be sure of it. It doesn't matter how useful your department is, the suits will only look at the $, even though long term they lose money destroying or outsourcing xzy department.

It's basically the cutting off your leg to row the boat strategy.

They’re going to regret using the Philippines and India for tech support and customer service. I’m sure they’re hiring better in different parts of the company, at least I hope.

The ones still left in the US always have to fix their mistakes and correct their lies. They have no clue how to do their job and some barely speak English.

Maybe Verizon should volunteer keeping jobs in America since they’re so worried about serving Americans. We are sc--wing our children with all this offshoring of jobs. But most are ok with it because they’re frightened to say anything about it. We are DESTROYING America all for the $$$$$$. When I say these things on our calls I get OH well.

Well, the OP is dead on about Ireland. And they ARE employees. It's a tax break for Verzon. Entire groups were told they'd be riffed AFTER training the people in Ireland how to do their jobs.

If we stayed in the office, they would have to find us work. Now that everyone is WFH, they only give us enough calls to meet obligations, the rest go overseas. In response to the first message, I’m not sure the union has enough of a stronghold on Verizon to fulfill another contract. The employees don’t wanna come into the office which makes you think they come out to the picket line. We need to RTO!!

Correct. There are a number of functions which can't be sent offshore under Patriot Act provisions. And they're not all under DOD or Federal Systems.

My boss teases the team that someone watches our screens and key strokes from India so they can replicate our jobs for cheaper when the company is ready to out source. I’ve seen weird things happen on my laptop so I believe it!!!

So DOD GEAs aren’t safe? I’m not sure if they can offshore all of public sector.
