Thread regarding Wells Fargo & Co. layoffs

I want to "work smarter, not harder"

I work 70+ hour weeks and I'm tired of it but I'm so scared of being fired if I say no to any of it that I just keep doing it. My boss is an a--hole and I wouldn't put something like that past him. So much of what I do is not my job but I got stuck with it after doing it "just this once." I had several people tell me that I should "work smarter, not harder" but how??? How do you do it when you need your job and can't risk being fired?

You can work both harder and smarter for yourself not Wells. Job jumping works. Each time I bailed on an employer, I increased my base pay by $15k. Sometimes I’d even get signing bonuses. There’s plenty of jobs out there as good if not better than Wells. Smarter and harder means dealing in volume for job searches. Take your experience and bail.

Ha ha ha. I love the quiet quit model with Covid and beyond. For the past three years, all I did was sign in, badge in, do minimum work, and get paid for it. Thanks Wells, you paid me nearly a half million for doing the minimum. Good luck tracking hours, monitoring people, and laying them off.

Push back in your current role. You "don't have capacity". Your boss is using you. Managers here are not experienced to care about workload. They are only looking out for themselves. Take a LOA &/or look for another role & don't let this happen in your new role.

Success at WF means doing myopic tasks and, maybe even more importantly, closing those tasks before it hits some audit report.

Recently I was asked to close a task before it ended up on report and recommended to open another task to replace it as a way to extend the clock.

This is infuriating on so many levels.

There is nothing you can do that will change your employment outcome. Taking more work won’t protect your job and turning down work won’t get you fired. Just say no. You are over capacity and cannot take any more.

Don’t worry about what your manager thinks. S/he is using you as a dumping ground because they know you won’t push back.

It’s time to stick up for yourself. You won’t regret it.

@dkj+1t4SxeWP, only dirty Indian employees will come up with that kind of dirty idea. But I like that idea this particular time!

@sbe+1t4SxeWP, allowing an outsider access WF computer is against the company's policy and it is illegal in the banking business. Having said that, if you do this while you are working from home, no one will find out, and that's a great idea!

You pay for freelancer with your funds. It will cost you 150-200 bucks
You do not inform anyone
Just use the tools to automate your own work without anybody knowing so you get more done in the standard 9-5 hours

@zdc+1t4SxeWP, freelancer? Who's gonna pay for the hours worked? Every team has a tight budget so they closely track each employee's activities at WF. You can ask your manager to hire somebody to automate your work, but then again, you will be replaced by the automation. LOL

Use freelancer to hire somebody to build you tools in Excel, Access, etc to automate your manual processes

Create fake customer accounts and make quick cash. That's how Carrie T became rich, she didn't even go to prison and comfortably retired.

Just don’t respond after your shift. If your manager continually calls after 5 don’t pick up and respond the next day. Don’t take on new work either and say your over capacity.

They are laying off a lot of workers without backfill, and that’s managements problem to figure out

Get an undetectable mouse jiggler and quiet-quit. That's working smarter.

Working smarter means upskilling yourself, learning about yourself and becoming a "business me". Don't give power to your boss. When I was laid off I was on non-speaking terms with my boss.
Working for a bank is a process. Like any process, there are stakeholders, strengths, weaknesses, threats etc. Why not model this process? You can start with this site: https://businessmodelyou.com/
By modeling yourself and the processes you partake in you can determine and put facts behind what you do. You will be able to back up and expound on the costs of doing the "only oncers". Then publish parts of your model to your 1,2 maybe 3 up.

That is a horrible situation to face everyday. It spills over into life outside of work and generates constant worry and, from my experience lots of sleepless nights. Not good at all.

The quick and easy answer is to find another job. In normal circumstances that still takes time and considerable effort. Having been in your situation, I often was so burned out that the positive momentum and ability to present yourself as a viable candidate was tough to do.

My advice is to try and let go a bit. Your future will be better. This particular position will not make or break your life. Don’t roll over for an A Hole boss. Keep your chin up as much as possible, do the true minimum of what needs to be done. As the intense feelings of pressure fade, start preparing to look for another job. But do so on your own terms and timeline. Don’t be forced into a desperate sense of urgency.

Remember, there are thousands of people showing up for work this morning feeling the same way. You are not alone in this mess.

It's called having some ba--s and exhibiting professionalism. If you are too intimidated by
your boss to have a conversation around 70+ hours of work you are already sc--wed.
You deserve what you get.

Just find a new job, honestly l. Smarter not harder means trying to automate some processes or similar.
