Thread regarding Bank of New York Mellon Corp. layoffs

I finally decided to leave

On my own accord. I can’t go through these endless layoffs anymore, first being scared that I am next, then feeling relief, followed by regret that I wasn’t actually fired. This is not an efficient and balanced way for a human being to work, live or function. I started looking for a new job a while ago. I’ve been patient, not rushing, and finally a good opportunity presented itself. It may not be better in some measurable way, but it will be better for my soul just to leave this place, whatever happens next. Good luck to you guys. Some of you were really great people to know and work with.

There’s a lot to hate here but “endless layoffs” are not even close to reality. Terminations for non RTO compliance more than makes up for the lack of layoffs.

You wont regret it. I was let go in March 2020 after many decades at BNYM. I ended up at the exact company I always thought I’d go to if I was let go. Its one if the biggest employers in Pittsburgh and my benefits and pay is very good. I thought it was over for me after 40 years but really it was the beginning. Happy and no longer worrying and waiting for doomsday!! Good luck. You can do it.

What endless layoffs? Boomers bore the full brunt of the layoffs from 2000 to 2008 which took the Bank from 54,000 to 52,100. This is easily proven at Yahoo Finance which clearly shows the generation which bore the vast majority of the displacements. We suffered unbelievably to bequeath a record low layoff level at BK. You’re welcome.

Good for you and Congratulations to you for taking action. I’ve joined the Bank several times and left several times…. Always on my terms. The more that you jump jobs the more desirable you are as a hire.

It used to be that people were valued for their longevity and job knowledge, which I always thought was fair. But these days the banks chase the job hoppers, and always with a raise. Start networking today.

So why aren’t you job hunting? Anyone in this situation who isn’t job hunting is on the lifer path, and that leads only to misery.

@1vep

That’s absolutely the way to handle it.

“ Congrats! I went through similar feelings. I wanted to be in a layoff, but they wouldn’t do it. The place just felt unbearable. After a year I finally got really good opportunity and left. I thanked the people whom I was with as I appreciated them except some of the management.”

You stand out here in a very good way. You’re just like a Boomer with your can do attitude, work ethic and job search. I’ve been encouraging people to do this here for two decades and gave up when I realized that they were all lifers.

There aren’t endless layoffs. Don’t make stuff up. They’re actually quite rare and very limited.

You left out taxing the people who buy foreign cars, cause you commute in one and you’re responsible for manufacturing jobs leaving our country.

See how this works?

You’re smarter than me because I stayed long enough for them to lay me off. I should’ve left on my accord when they most needed me. Tax corporations that layoff American workers and offshore their jobs to India and Poland. Tax the MFs to the max!

Congrats!! I recently did the same. I just couldn’t take the toxicity any longer, for the same reasons you stated (and a few more). Especially if you are not in a growth center, please do yourself a favor and start getting your resume out there.

This is some HR nonsense. What dept are you in? Give initials of your boss. I call BS.

It couldn’t be the fault of the employees who resist coming in to work. No…

It’s the irresponsible management that is reason for the disdain in the org. If there is any complacency and lack of ownership in the org, that’s only the symptom of their ineffectiveness and inability in providing responsible leadership.

I totally agree with how you are feeling. This not the kind of life I want to live. Need to control my destiny and find something new that I will be happy with. Good luck to anybody in this position of constant worry and stress this bank is putting us through.
