Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

volunteer for layoffs?

with the rumored upcoming layoffs coming up, is there anyway to volunteer yourself. I’ve never been so stressed and unhappy in a role I’d prefer to just be let go with some severance and find something else. I’m being very serious. Would love information if anyone has any.

Yes, let your manager know and be patient (I know this works). You will not be surplused just because you want to be. There will have to be surplus activity in your org. For example, If your manager and or director (or whomever picks people in your org) is aware, he /she can save someone and let you go in their place. You will have to be patient.

Management is different from craft, because no contractual work rules. Company can offer or do whatever they please, as long as it doesn’t violate labor laws.

In the past, the company has made bonus offers in addition to SIPP (severance) for craft to leave and one can volunteer and even tell their manager they want to leave but at the end of day, the company still has to follow all the contractual rules.

Managers with direct reports are doing everything they can to keep headcount up to remain employed, to build and maintain the network. Unless it’s a declared surplus from higher ups, you aren’t going to be let go voluntarily, only thing you can do is signup for SIPP and play the waiting game. Top wage scale in the SE only maxes out at approximately 40k for 29 years service and that’s not excluding the 40% haircut you take in taxes. You will get some of the tax back the following year, if your income is same or lower. Involuntary doubles that number.

YES, you can go to your supervisor and volunteer to be laid off, but that's ONLY if there's a surplus declared in your business unit. If there isn't a surplus declared in your business unit, then good luck with that! Your supervisor will laugh at you, believe me, I tried it! 2nd and 3rd level managers do whatever they can to maintain the head count just so they can justify their own existence!

In core SE bargained can sign up for SIPP. When a layoff happens in same title, org then, SIPP given by seniority. Believe same for Leg T but called VTP or something like that, basically just volunteering for layoff with severance.

If your in sales, you will be pip out of business or.. given insane unachievable quota.. that you will fail.
Forget packages.. 80% of employees are all stressed or upset by seeing the loss of good people.

Depends on your role, as a seller this won't happen, in anticipation of the recent reorganization I know of 3 coworkers who discussed this with their managers, two were moved over to lesser sales roles 1 to acquisition and 1 to mid markets, 1 was asked to stay for the good of the team, and now has been put on PIP and is in the process of being managed out. Rarely will severance be given to a sales person.

You could definitely let your interest be known to your immediate supervisor. It might end up saving someone else from the cut (this time) or it might not (these days)!
