The quality of Principal Engineers we have in SBG is astonishing. Almost all are friends of their managers who want to be Directors and need to have 1 or more PE reporting to them

I work in the San Jose office and I can confirm this generally how much PEs are making. But this was before the economy went to sh**. Over the last year, I’ve seen job posting for PE that is lower than this. California job posting requires the recruiter to be transparent on the compensation so you can see for yourself.

Total comp plan is possible. It's just another vanity position at this point in csco's downward spiral. I've not seen one PA/PE in 15 years do anything that warrants that kind of money, nor do I see it being something they will do in the future. Again, vanity positions that the theatre checkboxes want to have reporting to them when they brag how great their career has been.

They do. However, it doesn't mean some of them deserve the compensation. Cisco is running the friends and family program. Too many principle engineers are there because they are the friend of family member of someone in the higher levels.
