Words of wisdom

May 28, 2021 — "Working yourself out of a job gives you the freedom and flexibility - and the confidence - to move on and start something new.".

Isn’t that exciting news? Newfound freedom and flexibility! Oh wait, is that 2021? Oh dear. Might this be just a little out of date? The super smart tech folks have been working hard these last three years! In fact, hard enough to deliver AI as a desk mate. It’s us now that serves the machine which in turn makes your education, certificates and degrees useless more and more literally by the day. What a paradox, crawling into an inescapable box. What to tell the supportive family? I done gone and sc--wed it up. I didn’t think it would happen in my industry, I thought my company would support me, I didn’t think it would happen so quickly. Well you guys blew it for damn near the entire workforce. Now I have to go explain to my family. Have you hugged a techie today?

Thanks, I feel better now. It seems that I’m in a period of bad luck where people suffer in order to further the technology. Oh well, I’ll just su-k it up and hope to get a job feeding some sort of machine. I hope I can explain to my children the sacrifices that we’re making to their bleak future

@eyz+1tIQ3wa0 Not sure if ChatGPT or real but overall correct if not a long winded way to say change is difficult to accept. This is how people reacted when the horse and buggy went away, when handwashing was discovered, etc etc.

Pure fear mongering because of the unknown and of the expected. It is systemic in Wells Fargo, deep seated negative and hatred. Hilarious.

Every breakthrough throughout human history initially results in an emotional response that skews negative. Change is difficult no doubt.

We are only in the infancy of A.I. Companies are not squashing jobs today due to AI, rather to where we are in a smaller economic cycle. Tech has been roaring since about 2005, so AI or not, there was always going to be a massive pullback and the pandemic certainly compounded things.

So what do we do today if not convinced that AI isn't the problem? Change the conversation about the nature of work. Individuals need support in how to navigate and find new work. Huge opportunities exist in this space. Where change happens, new jobs in multiple fields are invented in support of said change.

Like it or not, our human ability to create, adapt and implement new tools is our number one greatest asset. AI is an amazing tool that will advance the human race in ways unfathomable. There are red flags, sure. It needs the upmost care and attention by a diverse number of disciplines and people. No one wants to live in a world that has been designed by a limited number of tech leaders and venture capitalists.

FYI, I'm not pied eyed about tech. In fact, I am in real danger (on a single income and older) of losing my tech job and unsure about my future.

But you won't find doom, gloom or cynicism on my tool belt. Expressing these things can make one feel like a realist when in reality it is all a handcuff. In all of history, real progress, real invention, is working through adversity (not succumbing to it).
