How to recover from a toxic job

Saw this on LinkedIn.

This is HOW you recover from a toxic job.

Save and study this cheat sheet.
10 steps you may need now, or in the future:

  1. Close the Door

↳ Leaving a job can be tough, so find ways to help you relax and feel good. Make sure you give yourself plenty of time to move on.

  1. Consider Professional Help

↳ Consider talking to a therapist or counsellor to work through any lingering stress or trauma from the toxic job environment.

  1. The Rebuild

↳ Being treated unfairly at work is never your fault. Focus on rebuilding your confidence with self-care and proactive steps like working on your CV and fully considering your next move.

  1. Remember the Positive Moments

↳ Spend a few minutes each day thinking about good memories and achievements. This can really help shift your mindset to a more positive outlook.

  1. Reflect on Lessons Learned

↳ Reflect on what aspects of your previous job made it unpleasant. Use this knowledge to avoid similar situations in the future.

  1. Maintain Positive Connections

↳ Stay in touch with colleagues who were POSITIVE influences. It’s okay to distance yourself from those who brought negativity.

  1. Set New Goals

↳ Establish personal and professional goals that excite you. This can help shift your focus from the past to a positive future.

  1. Formulate a Plan

↳ Look for a new job with a healthier environment. Set personal boundaries and reflect on how you can improve in your next role to ensure a better experience.

  1. Get Prepared for Your New Job

↳ Think about what might stress you out in a new job based on your past experiences. Being aware of this can help you prepare and handle things better.

  1. Connect With Positive People

↳ Find mentors and leaders in your new job who can provide guidance and positivity. Connect with new colleagues who support you and contribute to a positive work culture.

TLDR:

A toxic workplace is more likely to change you than you are to change it.
Embrace new beginnings, grow from past lessons, and seek positivity with every step forward.

@1lil It’s normal and healthy to seek these kinds of things outside of work.

Doing so also comes with benefits. One being that when your company puts you on a PIP, outsources your job, and freezes your pay, you have a social network outside of work to rely upon.

Forming the basis of friendships would be awesome if your peers weren’t stabbing you in the back.

I strongly disagree w "it's only a job" mentality. Working hard and close w people forms the basis of life long friendships and connections, including families. It's the very stuff life is (was) made of. You can't have it without loyalty and a measure of security.
This "who cares" resignation and d-mbing down us only a defensive reaction. Go find a place where you feel safe and valued, regardless of the money.

Waste no more time arguing what a good man should be. Be one.

I don’t think this generation understands that once upon a time, company sold many of us the idea of a long term career with a company. In return for our dedication and loyalty, they gave us opportunities, a career, and financial security in the form of pensions. Those days are long gone. I think companies should stop selling this idea because it’s a lie.

I can’t emphasize enough the importance of distancing yourself from the job. Play hard, do your best, enjoy it, but never ever pour your soul or neglect yourself or your family because of a job. Hold no resentment, anger or regret. Take some good memories, but don’t romanticize over it too much. Because someday you will have to leave that job. If you are lucky, you can leave something for the next person who maybe will value or care about the job as much you…so they will remember you well.

The following quote by Simon Sinek reminds me that jobs and roles are meant to be temporary.

“All the perks, all the benefits and advantages you may get for the rank or position you hold, they aren’t meant for you. They are meant for the role you fill. And when you leave your role, which eventually you will, they will give the ceramic cup to the person who replaces you. Because you only ever deserved a Styrofoam cup.”

Met a real cutie at the old Buffalo Speedway location back in the early 80’s we were testing different RVP blends on employees vehicles, the good old days……company was a great place to work back then……

You showed up for work. You got paid, quite well for the amount of work. That's it. Anything beyond that are overthinking and snowflakes

@OP People who feel compelled to post stuff like this really do need to resign.

And if they’ve already resigned, they need to let the place go.

It’s a job. Not a spouse. You turn in your badge, you walk out the door, and it’s done. If you’re thinking about it any deeper than that, then you’re the one with the problem.

Good advice and so true. Exxon has ruined a lot of good employees over the years. Don't let this company ruin you for the next job. I was just given a needs improvement because of back talk and stabbing. This put me in a bad mood and my family life suffered. I was having bad dreams and problems sleeping. My supervisor said the place is competitive and workers are given enough rope to hang themselves. I found a therapist that an old exxon friend has seen. There are therapist that have seen many exxon employees and have helped them. The therapist has made see the positive path and let go of all the worry and fear. My problem is that all the good people have left the company. people who you could trust not to stab you in the back or throw you under the bus. No all I am surrounded by are a kissers that would do anything for a promotion. I think exxon loves these workers who are willing to sell their soul. No decency or integrity with the workers or management. I am the last of the old generation and will leave as soon as I can. Exxon can make you lose your mind and make you sick. Don't let it. Remember you have the power. If you are NRE you can fight back a bit because of the protection. Once you are RE you can pi-s them off and retire if you are piped. I know a few that had their revenge when the were RE. They started saying the truth in meeting about how absurd the company was and the management. It was hilarious to see the managers and supervisors insulted to their faces. Every laughed at this and the employees said it was worth it to tell the truth. One person sent a scathing truthful email to everyone in our section detailing the incompetence of the mangers and the unfair treatment of workers. We saved the email a posted it on the board at the old buffalo speedway location. management was pi---d. Revenge is always the best way. Exxon can't stand the truth so sites like this and glass door reviews ki-l them. I know the a kissing management reads this because in a meeting some post here were mentioned by a vice president. So if you are reading this don't think we will just go quietly and not tell the truth. I was asked to watch my fellow employees and report to the supervisor. I responded with they were doing an excellent job which the supervisor did not like. Don't let Exxon take your integrity or soul.
