Thread regarding AT&T layoffs

Office hours mandate

Had a few team members get called out on what time they leave the office they arrive around 6am and leave 1p/2p. they spend majority of time in office and finish up work at home. However upper management is giving pushback saying these “in office” hours will not work. They are now being asked not to leave any earlier than 3. Is this a mandate or is upper management being d***s.

Networking guy here, before a bunch of non technical people come in here dumping on me for hating RTO - it’s 6pm on a Friday and I’m sitting in the office writing code.

So, I don’t wanna hear it.

“someone in an org who's name is Ward Chew or something like that, said that they are no longer enforcing rto and are quietly disregarding any of Stankey's directives. sounds like a coup may be starting?”

Ward Chewning - that’s the networking org, where I work.
I haven’t heard this though - but if it’s true it’s probably being kept very hush.
We’re stretched thin, trying to migrate everything to Ericsson as per the new business deal, writing a lot of new software for optimization, etc…we lost a ton of valuable security experts and developers due to RTO.

I wouldn’t be surprised if someone put their foot down considering the network is how we make our money and the loss of talent is an existential threat to the company.

was told this week that people were being fired for COBC violation for not following RTO. specifically, if not staying 8+ hours 3-5 days a week

“Your manager must be seeing your lack of collaboration in the afternoon. The next step will be a PiP.”

My manager works in a whole different state as my team is spread out internationally.
What do we do about that?

We gonna make the people who live in Israel, India, Canada, and all three hubs, move to the same place?
Technical teams are spread out far and wide because that’s where the talent is.
I don’t work in a field where you can just grab a person off the street.
What’s the solution there?
:^)

“Easy fix…you badge out when you leave, just like when you enter. This would be a simple way to track hours.”

Costs money, not all doors have badge trackers, some offices have no badges at all.
Not gonna happen.

There’s currently no tools to track hours, what org is this?

Lots of questions with this.”

From physically seeing them/ gossips from other employees

I keep edibles in my office desk. Eight hours is easy. It’s actually quite entertaining at times.

“Dallas “flexible scheduling for optimum collaboration” for all management employees starts October 1. Requires 4 days per week in Dallas, your choice of Monday or Friday for working remote. Schedule requires 8 hours per day in office. You may take a 30 or 60 minute lunch break. You can leave no earlier than 3:30pm to allow for maximum collaboration. Adjust your schedules.”

Cool story.

“This is funny. So when can we expect this heartfelt announcement from Stankey, admitting he was wrong on RTO and reversing policy? Will that be coming along with the culture survey results, or...?”

Never, I work in network…it would be amazing, but Stankey will never admit he’s wrong about anything.
They would, hypothetically, just whisper it to org leaders to stop enforcing RTO and we’d have a little meeting with our directors or whatever and they’d let us know to stop worrying about it cause we’re special or something and that’d be that.
We’d always live in fear though of them ‘changing their minds’ again and being like “hahahaha remember when we said you didn’t have to move to Dallas, well Stankey woke up on the wrong side of the bed today, so now you have a week to move to Dallas, hilarious right?”

"...99% of the "culture" issues at AT&T are because of RTO..."

Disagree, 99% of the culture issues are because everyone lost faith in executive leadership a long time ago, and they continue to erode even the smallest amount of trust that may have remained by things like suppressing survey results that they stated they would share because it paints them in a horrible light and calls for major changes at that level.

Heard the same. By 2Q next year RTO ends and a fire sale of real estate begins.

Fingers crossed that this is true. Would cause a 5 point stock bump at least. 99% of the "culture" issues at AT&T are because of RTO. Fix that and we can turn this thing around.

“ 8 hours does not include a 30-60 minute lunch break which is required by law… so we need to be there 8.5 to 9 hours total.”

Depends on the state you live in. It is not required by law in my state. Eight and out. I’m good.

If the stated expectation doesn’t work with your daily needs, there are plenty of open positions in other companies. Try your skills at flipping burgers for a month.
